PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." Aristotle
The month of February is the perfect time to remind ourselves of the commitment of continuing to build intentional relationships with our students. It is through these intentional relationship building efforts that students make personal connections, feel deeply valued and academics flourish. Every kind note, student drawing, or conversations as I pass students in the hallways are a reminder of the positive relationships I have built. It is also a reminder of the intentional work I have to do to continue to build these relationships with other students in the building. Your children are a gift that we receive in this building each day. I look forward to getting to know every student on a deeper level during the second half of the year.
Our February newsletter highlights important dates and information to help our families stay informed. My door is always open. Please contact me if have any questions or concerns.

WELCOME, MISS HERNANDEZ
Hello! My name is Miss Marah Hernandez and I am very excited to be teaching 4th grade math and science/social studies at Bermudian Springs Elementary School! I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, so I am a huge Steelers fan. I recently graduated from Duquesne University where I received my Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. I have always had a huge passion for working with children and find to be the most myself around them. This is my first year teaching, so I am excited to learn, grow, and have fun with all of my students!
I am so thrilled to be part of this fantastic district, and I am looking forward to working with my new team, students, and families!

PLAYING OUTSIDE DURING THE WINTER MONTHS
Kids love to play outside in the snow and ice, but they are more vulnerable to cold weather than adults are. Most kids do not notice changes in their bodies related to cold exposure.
Frostbite and hypothermia occur more frequently in children because they have larger heads and large body surface area compared to their body mass, and this leads to rapid heat loss. Younger children usually do not have as much energy reserves to burn when it comes to being in cold.
Here are tips to ensure that children are safe while playing outside during the winter months:
Vulnerable extremities, such as the ears, nose, hands and feet, should always be covered and kept as warm as possible to avoid frostbite.
Make sure children wear a hat, which is key to retaining up to 60 percent of their body heat.
Children should dress in layers so moisture can be kept away from the skin. Wet layers should be taken off so children stay warm and dry.

Volunteering with Your Child's Class?
We have several in-school volunteer opportunities coming up this spring like Kindergarten Registration, Mobile Dentist, Book Fair, Spring Pictures, and 4th Grade Picnic. If you’re planning to volunteer or assist with your child’s class at any of these events, you MUST have up-to-date clearances on file with the school office. Clearances must be submitted to the office for approval two weeks prior to volunteering. The clearance process can take up to two weeks to complete, so don't wait until the last minute! Download the clearance packet and view current volunteer opportunities at bsespto.com/volunteer.
Next Meeting - Wednesday, February 15
Join us for our next meeting to hear from our principals, and get to know other parents! We meet at 9:30am (PTO Room) and 6:30pm (Library/Media Center & remotely via WebEx) to accommodate varying work schedules. Children are welcome to attend either meeting with parents — we’ll have some toys, activities, & snacks on hand. Agendas and minutes from past meetings can be viewed at bsespto.com/minutes. Parents who attend one meeting (AM in person / PM in person or virtually) each month are entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card! The spring attendance winner will be drawn at the May evening meeting.
Spring Fundraiser - READ-A-THON (March 2-19)
During the first two weeks of March, BSES students will participate in a building-wide READ-A-THON to strengthen their reading skills and raise money for our school! Students will earn cool prizes for completing reading challenges, and ask family & friends for donations to support their education at BSES. More info about the fundraiser will be sent home with students by March 2nd.
Get Involved!
If you want to get more involved but aren’t sure how, reach out to Andrea Everhart (President), Jason Mleczko (Vice President), Amanda Wolfe (Treasurer), Giovanna Biles (Secretary), or Julie Williams and Kylee King (Appreciation Committee Co-Chairs). We'd love to get you plugged in at BSES!
