The Effects of Steroids on Muscles

What they are, and what you need to know.

What are steroids?

There are different kinds of steroids, some can be used as anti inflammatory to control conditions like asthma and lupus, others are used to try and increase muscle mass. These are called Anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are synthetic hormones that can boost the body's ability to produce muscle and prevent muscle breakdown they also help the body retain protein which helps build muscle, skin, and bone Steroids also block the effect of the hormone cortisol on muscle tissue. Cortisol is a hormone that helps metabolize muscle, when its blocked or slowed existing muscle is broken down at a slower rate.

So what negative effects do anabolic steroids have on muscle?

The results of taking anabolic steroids

Anabolic steroids are made up of the hormone Testosterone. Both men and woman have this hormone already but when more is added a hormonal imbalance occurs. Your body stops producing these hormones on its own, relying on the supplement so when you have to stop taking steroids for whatever reason, blood clots, liver problems, kidney problems, circulation problems, a pulmonary embolism, or a tumor. (take your pick) Your body still won't produce the testosterone you need to function correctly, so your whole body becomes weak, you lose more then just the muscle mass you gained, and basically shrivel up. It is said that your natural testosterone production will remain dormant for however long you were on steroids. So if you took them for six years it will be another six years before your body starts producing again, sometimes your body never returns to its normal production. Steroids can leave you with smaller muscles then before you started taking them.
