Effective Teaching Utilizing Research - Beth Rock M.Ed.
In many ways, today’s classroom looks very similar to thirty-three years ago when I began my journey as an educator. However, a significant shift that has occurred in recent years is the importance of teacher research skills as they shape the approach to curricular goals and student growth. Instead of entering the classroom asking “What will my students learn today?”, the teacher/researcher asks “What will I learn from my students today?” To answer this question, teachers create a picture of each student through data gained from formative assessments, classroom observations, conversations, benchmarking scores, as well as attention to learning styles and student interest. Identifying the various levels of knowledge in the classroom is imperative to knowing how and where to begin the scaffolding process and adapt course content.
To promote growth in each student, teachers must support a variety of learning levels, especially targeting the needs of students who are furthest behind. Effective use of data helps educators understand their learners. This, together with building relationships with students, will help teachers to effectively personalize instruction to meet unique needs.
Effectively translating data insights into instructional decisions can be challenging. The following video demonstrates how the Aurora School District uses data to refine teaching practices.
