This week at KJHS...
helping families to stay connected. November 13, 2014
Book fair is coming November 17!!
Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills kids learn, it is the one you can influence the most. We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.
Our Book Fair is part of a reading event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and it’s the door opener to the 21st all children. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair.
Book Fair Dates: November 17th
Shopping Hours: School breaks and lunch time
Special Events: Parent night November 20th
Before you visit the Book Fair be sure to download the FREE Book Fairs App to help you find the right fit books for your student. For more information, visit: scholastic.com/apps/bookfairs. And if you’re all booked up during Book Fair week be sure to visit the Book Fair online at scholastic.com/fair. Our Online Fair is available for an extended time from November 12th to December 2nd
We look forward to having you participate in our Fair, and remember, all purchases benefit our school.
Science classes hard at work!

What's happening in Science classes?
8th grade science is studying the atom and the periodic table. Students will be using their chromebooks to do research in order to create a Google Presentation on a specific element.
8th grade students have worked hard on several projects, showing a deeper understanding by creating a poster revealing patterns of the periodic table, making a poster showing the atomic structures of the elements, creating a google presentation on an element of their choice, and soon they will also be using a fun app on the iTouches called “Go React” which engages the students to see how compounds are created. It’s a free app that can be downloaded on their smartphones. We are now learning how to make polymers in class. We made goop from glue and borax and dissolved a Styrofoam cup in acetone. The students were amazed! And of course, we will throw them our out-of-this-world ”Alien Periodic Table” to end our portion of the Periodic Table.
Lots of labs to finish up the chemistry unit and they will soon take our Chemistry final - which will be just before Thanksgiving break. Then we will begin Physics!
In seventh grade science we are completing the study of classification. One of the numerous labs in this unit involved students classifying their shoes. Students were placed in two groups of approximately 14 individuals and then asked to remove their right shoe. From there students had to develop a system that organized the shoes into a chart form based on similar characteristics. Once the group members agreed on the traits (an arduous task), shoes were returned to the owners as they were classified.
Currently we are at the end of this unit and working on a cumulative project. Students become astronauts and explorers (blasted them into space using the YouTube video “Going to the Edge of the Universe Space Travel” and upon arrival at their destination “beamed them down” to the planet Nitram), who had to make first contact with the life forms on the new planet. Students are currently designing a classification system (including computing size in metrics and English) for these strange life forms to be used by future colonists. Later they will be completing illustrations of each organism along with writing in their journals about their experiences on this new and exciting Planet.
