Isabella d'Este's Background

May 18th 1947 Isabella d'Este was born in Ferrara Italy, her father was a duke. She was the oldest of her siblings, and was said to be the favorite. At sixteen She married Francessco Gonzaga, the duke of Mantua. She then had nine kids, and strongly supported the arts.

Achievements

At sixteen she could speak Latin, and Greek fluently and knew enough about politics to debate ambassadors. Isabella took control of the city when her husband was away-which was often- and when he died. She wrote over two thousand letters in her lifetime about war and art.

Impact on Today

Isabella set an example and encouraged women to break away from the stereo typical routine. She also supported the arts and played a role in cultural and political development.

Interesting Facts

It's said that She was named for her relative Queen Isabella of Spain. Leonardo de Vinvi even painted a picture of her in the 1500s.

The picture to the right was the one Leonardo painted of her.
