Week of May 23rd-27th

Classroom Happenings

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our multiplication ice cream party will be taking place on Friday, May 27th. A HUGE thank you to everyone who volunteered to donate. I am so thankful for all your generosity! Notes are coming home today to let you know what item to bring in; I am asking that all ice cream goodies be brought in by Thursday to ensure that we have everything in time for the party. Because so many people volunteered to donate, not everyone will need to bring something. Again, thank you for all of the support. The kids have worked so hard on mastering their facts and are VERY excited for the party!

Our 4th grade classes will be going to Valplayso with our book buddies on Tuesday, May 31st to celebrate the friendships that have formed through the year and the hard work that's been put into improving our reading. We will leave Central at 11 AM and return at approximately 1:30 PM. A field trip lunch form is coming home today and needs to be returned by Wednesday, May 25th. If your child is bringing a lunch from home, please check that option on the form. Thank you!

Student Council's "Mayhem Days"

Our last dress up day is Favorite Sports Team Day on Friday, May 27th. Students can wear a shirt or jersey from their favorite professional or college sports team.

May Book Order:

With summer just around the corner, it is the perfect time to stock up on some fun summer books. If you are interested in placing an order, you can fill out the form and send in a check made out to Scholastic Reading Club OR you can place your order online. To order online, go to scholastic.com/readingclub and use our class code: NG6FZ. One of the perks of ordering online is that it gives our classroom extra points that can be used on getting more books for our classroom library. All orders need to be in by Tuesday, May 24th. Happy ordering! :)

Field Day:

Field Day will be held Thursday, June 2nd. Every class has been assigned a color to wear that day in order to help staff keep track of all the kiddos. Our class color is royal blue. Please do not feel obligated to buy a shirt in this color. If your child does not have one, just have him/her wear a shirt in any shade of blue, if possible.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please have your child wear sunscreen--No one wants to start the summer with a nasty sunburn!
  • We will have water stations at Field Day, but your child is able to bring a water bottle of his/her own.
  • If your child is susceptible to bug bites, please put bug spray on prior to sending him/her to school.

Students took their last science test of the school year on Wednesday. I handed them back on Thursday, and we went over the questions that students missed.

Social Studies

We left off with learning about: Indiana becoming a state, pioneer living, and improvements in transportation. We are now about to begin unit 4 which further explores the growth of Indiana. This week, we will be discussing the following:
  • Indiana and the Civil War
  • Reconstruction

About a week ago, I started reading the story Holes aloud to our class. The story focuses on a boy named Stanley who always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. One of these incidents led him to Camp Green Lake- a detention center for boys. Each day, Stanley and the other boys are required to dig 1 hole that measures 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide. While they are told they are digging holes to build character, the real reason is that there is something hidden underneath the dry, rocky ground. We are going to continue the story and see if Stanley and the other boys uncover anything important as they dig.

During our reading rotations, I will also be Benchmark testing students for the third and final time this school year. This testing helps us determine your child's reading level.

We are continuing our unit on algebraic thinking and will be working more on identifying and extending different patterns. We will focus primarily on the following topics this week:

  • square numbers
  • line graphs
  • double line graphs

We are moving into the adverb portion of our grammar unit. We will be working on the following:

  • definition of an adverb
  • adverbs that tell when or where
  • adverbs that compare
