Staff Appreciation Week May 1-5

I would like to thank all the wonderful staff we have here at Smith Elementary for everything they do. It takes a collaborative effort on a daily basis to provide a wonderful educational experience for our students, staff, and parents. If you see one our staff members, please be sure to thank them for all that they do here at Emma L. Smith Elementary.

3rd grade M-STEP

This spring, every 3rd grade student will be taking our statewide assessment, called the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). It will be given online and will measure current student knowledge.

The M-STEP will assess student learning on Michigan’s standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts.

The testing schedule for all 3rd grade classrooms is as follows:

May 10

English Language Arts (ELA)

Time: 10:15-12:30

May 16 & 18


Time: 10:15-12:30

Please try to avoid any appointments during these dates/times and your child is well-rested and has a good breakfast. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me.

School Starts at 11:32 a.m.

Please remain in the lobby area until 11:25 a.m. Bell will ring for students to enter hallways at 11:25 a.m.

Feelin' Good Mileage Club

The program will run April 10 - May 26. Students will get their punch cards during this week and will begin earning miles. Students will run to earn toe tokens and hopefully enough miles for a water bottle.

School Volunteers/Visitors

Please check in with the office when you arrive. You will be required to wear a visitors badge

All volunteers are required to have a background check on file. Background checks are good for one full year. Please contact the main office or Mr. Edwards if you have any questions.

Morning Drop Off/Afternoon Pick Up

As a reminder, we ask that all parents remain in the lobby area before the bell rings at 8:52 and before the bell rings at 3:45 at the end of the day. Thank you for your cooperation.

3:35 - Kindergarten released to buses and parent pick up

3:42 - 1st - 3rd grade Kids Club, Walkers, and pick ups released

3:45 - All bussers released

Late Start Days

  • Students will eat lunch
  • Each class will receive 40 minutes of specials
  • Normal afternoon recess

Insurance and Maintenance Fee for Chromebooks

If you are still in need of assistance with the Insurance/Maintenance Fee for our 1:1 Chromebooks, please contact Mr. Edwards as soon as possible. We encourage you to set up a payment plan, whether it's $1/week or a month, or what every you can manage, we will work with each family to ensure your students device is covered
