Message from Ms. Rivera

This has been a fast nine months of school, and I am so proud of how much our kids have grown, socially and academically. As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I cannot thank our teachers and staff enough for what they do. They come in early, stay up late, and work on weekends to ensure that our kids get the best education possible.

I also want to thank you for entrusting us with your kids. They are special and precious, and we will miss them over the break. Thank you for everything you do to support us and to support learning at home. I hope you and your family have a safe and happy summer break!

May Teacher of the Month

Our May Teacher of the Month is Marcie Harendt! This is Mrs. Harendt's second year at Smith Elementary, and in that short time, she has made a huge difference. Mrs. Harendt is a role model for our students because of her work ethic and her positive attitude. She teaches fourth grade math, and her students excel because of her.

You have probably seen Mrs. Harendt around school, because in addition to being an incredible teacher, she is also a dedicated volunteer. She works at our Raising Readers nights, volunteers for PTO events, and she even took her turn in the dunk booth on Saturday. Thank you for all you do, Mrs. Harendt!

May Paraprofessional of the Month

Our May Paraprofessional of the Month is Jackie George! Mrs. George is one of our PE paras, and she takes charge of the class when Mrs. Hoffart, the PE teacher, is at the other campus. It is not easy managing 60+ students with two staff members, but Mrs. George does a great job because she is energetic and tenacious.

Mrs. George also supports our school outside of PE. She has a great attitude, is always smiling, and she is up for anything. Congratulations, Mrs. George! Thank you for being you!

Testing Dates

End of the year assessments for every grade level are happening now. Students take reading and math assessments in each grade, even Pre-K, and K-4 also submit a writing sample. We are looking forward to seeing the growth our kids have made.

Third and fourth graders will take the STAAR on May 11th (Math) and May 17th (Reading). We do not make a big deal out of the STAAR test. Students have taken many long tests this year, and we tell them that this is just another day where they will work hard so that we can see their strengths and needs.

PTO News

Thank you to everyone who volunteered and attended the carnival. It was a huge hit! Click here to access the PTO Facebook page, or search for Cedric C. Smith Elementary PTO.

The next PTO event will be on Friday, May 13th from 5:00 to 7:00. It will be a Summer Safety Event with visitors and booths from the community, such as Constable Chris Jones and the Magnolia Fire Department. We hope to see you there!

School Board Election on May 7th
