Why Writing Workshop?
"Writing workshop uses conventions for audience"
In writing workshop, students have audiences beyond the classroom teacher and see how their writing affects others. They learn to use grammar and spelling conventions that enhance and clarify meaning in the texts they write. They learn to identify and choose punctuation, line breaks, diction and other conventions appropriate to the audience to ensure that texts are read as the writer intends. In this way writers learn that their words— and how they present those words— have the power to inform, persuade, move, entertain, challenge and profoundly impact readers.
A Moment with Mrs. Chadwell - The TCE Global Studies Instructor
In 2nd-4th grade we read a story called “La Frontera (the border)”. This book is about a boy and his difficult journey with his Papa from Mexico to the United States. This is kid friendly and is based on a true story. This story introduces the word immigration and discusses the many reasons why someone would decide to move from their home country to another to gain citizenship. It also connects the word immigration with true humans and their dedication to family, strength and perseverance despite difficulties they face. In addition to this I also shared with them 2 inspiring and famous immigrants that came to the United States and have enriched our country despite the challenges they faced throughout their journey to success. I introduced them to Sergey Brin the founder of Google and the basketball legend Dikembe Mutomobo. These are just 2 of the many famous immigrants whom have demonstrated such bravery, strength, perseverance and success in their immigration to United States. We also discussed how interesting it is that we as Americans have such freedoms and rights and we often give up on things quickly and the characters discussed above never gave-up throughout their challenging journeys. The students seemed to really enjoy this book and learning about Sergey Brin and Dikembe Mutomobo.
Library Volunteers
Library volunteers are needed to help with shelving and checking in books in our TCE Library. Volunteering in the library is fun and the schedule is flexible! If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mrs. Hopper, TCE Librarian (lhopper@hse.k12.in.us).
*A safe visitor background check is required for all school volunteers. For more information on background checks, visit https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering.
