Knights School Counseling News
Vol 9
Recap of May
May was a wonderful month for us in the school counseling office. The beginning of the month was EXTREMELY busy with AP tests and finishing all of my individual meetings with the sophomores and freshmen.
We had a three-part college workshop series for our juniors beginning May 3rd with our "Competitive College Workshop" This workshop was very informative for the students and parents that attended. The second workshop took place in school for all juniors and took two class periods (one English and one U.S. History). During this time I gave the juniors summer homework...they need to narrow down their college choices, visit if possible, begin the Common APP (if applicable), complete their brag sheets, work on their resumé, and write their college essay. I know this is a lot of work but it will pay off come September! Our third workshop was on Financial Aid and gave a timeline for what should be done in regards to the financial aid process, which will change drastically with an October 1st start date to complete the FAFSA.
We had a very successful trip for our international students to Mystic CT, and Boston. During the trip we took them to Old Sturbridge Village, Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, on Boston's Freedom Trail and to Quincy Market. Of course we also had time for some shopping in Mystic, Boston, and the Lee Outlets and really enjoyed a night out at the Blue Man Group!
Our Life Skills class for the 6th grade students focused on May being Mental Health Awareness month and we watched Inside Out. The students were then broken into small groups and presented to the class on different emotions in the movie and the importance of all of the emotions we experience.
We celebrated our last "Wacky Wednesday Lunch" with an ice cream social for the students. Overall it went really well and I know that there were numerous students that learned something new about other students. I also noticed that some students felt more included in the lunch room that may not always feel that way.
I saved the best for last! My favorite part of the May was our "Reach Higher Ceremony" for our seniors. Mrs. Boulé and I worked extremely hard to put together a ceremony to honor our seniors and the choices they have each made to continue their education after high school. We are so fortunate that Assemblywoman Janet Duprey came and spoke to the students about the value of continuing their education. For each student we announced his/her educational choice, concentration of study (if known), what the teachers think of him/her, what his/her favorite part of senior year was, what he/she will miss about Seton Catholic, what he/she learned during the college/application process, and words of wisdom for the underclassmen. All of our seniors will be continuing to study in a technical school, 2 year school, or a 4 year school and we are SO PROUD of all of them. I am including some photos to share with you. I would like to note that our group photo is missing one of our seniors, Elijah Kelting, who was at the Plattsburgh Aeronautical Institute.
