Leader in Me Family Night
Submitted by Marilyn Oestreich
On October 8th we had our first Leader in Me Family Night and the 3rd grade staff and students shared Habit 1, Be Proactive with the families. With over 135 guests, there was a great turnout of families and we enjoyed tacos prepared by East's cook, Raymond Mercado and watched the 2019 Leader In Me video. Everyone received a raffle ticket as they signed in at the door and were put in a drawing. Local businesses donated for the raffle.
Okanogan County PUD Demonstration
Submitted by Joneen Ingram
East Omak Elementary 4th grade students were given the opportunity to participate in an electrical demonstration put on by the Okanogan County PUD on October 9th. During this time students watched demonstrations of how conductors and insulators worked, learned about many of the key components of electrical power, how they electricity gets to our homes and businesses, and had to opportunity to participate in some hands on activities including: operating a hot stick and using a pulley. Students also learned about electrical safety and many aspects related to the lineman career field. The lineman did a great job of involving students in the process by giving kids time to interact with equipment and ask questions, they were also very thorough with electrical safety. Students enjoyed the presentation and were excited to bring some of their learning back to the classroom where the 4th grade is currently studying electricity in their Science unit.School Garden Fall Work Party
East Omak Elementary held a garden work party on October 12, 2019 from 9 am to 12 pm. Families worked alongside a crew of about 30 volunteers from the Department of Natural Resources to prepare existing raised beds for winter, and to create an outdoor classroom and new raised beds. DNR provided log rounds to serve as seats for the outdoor classroom area. Kids painted rocks for the borders of new beds for pollinators and native plants. Volunteers cleaned out the existing beds and covered them with a thick layer of compost. Volunteers also created a new raised bed for planting squash. Around the perimeter of the garden, volunteers carried bricks one by one to complete the border. We held a raffle to give away a variety of donated prizes from the Colville Youth Develpment Program, including gift cards, winter hats and gloves, insulated mugs, and science experiment kits. Volunteers enjoyed coffee and donuts when taking a break from all of the hard work they were doing. The garden is now ready for winter and the overall vision is starting to take shape.
