Simon Birch
By: Tierra Andersen
Theme
- Evidence: Joe states," I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice, not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because, he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God. What faith I have, I owe to Simon Birch, the boy I grew up with in Gravedown, Maine."
- This evidence shows that, Joe kept showing his faith through God even when his mom died. Simon helped him overcome him giving up on God when his mom dies. Simon and Joe have faced multiple issues and Simon kept his faith with God and guides Joe. Joe stops believing in God and loses his faith after his mom dies because he has struggles dealing with her death. This is only one of the issues that occurred in the movie, that Joe had a hard time with and Simon had to help him with.
Simon's Character
Emotional Characteristics: He believes in God and that he has a plan for him and everyone else. Also he is very hopeful and caring about everyone.
Interactions: Very friendly with others, his church leaders aren't very nice to him but he still try's to be kind to them, outgoing, his parents think he is a screw up.
His Change: He starts off from being an outsider/hopeful kid--> being a hero and taking action.
His Type of Character: He is a dynamic character-changes physically or emotionally- and a round character- A lot of details, emotion, depth.
Evidence: Joe states, " Simon and I never talked much about that day on the baseball field. It was too painful for both of us. For as much as I loved my mother, I knew that Simon loved her just as much. She was the only real mother he ever had."
Evidence Proves: This evidence proves that Simon's parents didn't care much for him because Joe's mom was like the only real mother Simon has ever had. Also that he is caring because when Joe's mom died, it was only painful for him but was also for Simon. Simon thought of Joe's mom as his too, and was just as much pain when she died. He was really sad that he accidently caused the death of Joe's mom and gave Joe his baseball cards, which are valuable to him.
Joe's Moms Death
It was all an accident. I didn't mean hit her in the head with the baseball. Of course the day I finally was told to swing at the ball, this happens. When I saw the ball flying through the air, I was smiling on the inside that I hit it, but when it hit goes mom in the head, my mind went blank. I loved Joe's mom that day will haunt me for the rest of my life. I don't know how to say sorry to Joe. He was mad at me for a bit. I knew I had to do something but I didn't know so I just gave him my valuable baseball cards, to show I was really sorry. I will always love Joe's mom and still to this day is still very sorry.
Christmas Play
Marjorie kept asking if I was okay and I was getting kind of excited, so I grabbed her. This caused chaos for everyone else, because everyone was trying to get Marjorie away from me. Then the kid playing the angel threw up on Ms. Leavy. So after all this chaos, I got kicked out of the church group and I wasn't happy because I really enjoyed church.
