Aggie on Campus — Our Interview with Brooke Weston

By: Ryan Karr

We talked with Brooke Weston on Thursday, November 5th about her application to A&M.

When Brooke learned that she had been accepted she was very happy (she even cried a little) and she felt a sense of accomplishment. She selected A&M because of its strong traditions and its tight family setting.

She enjoys the teachers’ involvement and how one-on-one they are. This is what helped Brooke the most in the application process. Brooke said that Kyle Blonde, her sophomore and junior year teacher, influenced her most because of her personal relationships and college advice for each of the students.

Brooke advised others preparing for college to “study what you want to major in, because it is hard to change your major.” She also said that a college should feel “homey” when someone selects it.

We’re so excited for Brooke and can’t wait to see what happens next. Steele is extremely proud of its “Aggie on campus.”

Secrets of Steele

Jaiden Washington

Jaiden Washington has a secret that not many people know. She is a very talented wig maker. This is a hard job for many people. Each wig takes about 4-5 hours to make, easily filling her schedule. Making so many wigs refines her work and strengthens her love for the art. In her journey to master wig making Jaiden first mastered the clip in. It has taken her about three years to learn how to make wigs on her own. Considering the difficulty of her pastime, Jaiden Washington is one talented student.

Patrick Knox Rocks!

By: Alex Wagner

Patrick Knox is a junior here at Steele. Patrick is actually agender, meaning without gender, and is also gay. Patrick prefers the pronouns they and them, as they are gender neutral, and it is what I will be using to refer to them throughout this article.

They’re from Bedford, Texas but currently reside in Haslet, Texas. Patrick is also an honorary burger creator at Whataburger. In their free time, Patrick enjoys studying maps and flags because they is a nerd. Another thing that Patrick is interested in is terraforming the planet Mars, meaning making it inhabitable for human life. They would like to personally begin working on this before they die.

Patrick also has a secret. Their shoes may look like any other ordinary shoes, but if one were to examine the bottom of one of these shoes, they would see that Patrick is actually wearing CROCS! I guess you could call they… Patrick Crocs.

My absolute favorite thing about Patrick is that they have never ever had diarrhea in their entire life! Their advice for leading a diarrhea free life is drinking aloe vera juice (make sure to eat the pulp!) and not eating anything stupid.

Patrick would also like for Vernin Supreme and Bernie Sanders to win the upcoming election. For more on Patrick and their bowels of steele, just go say hi (at your own risk.)

3 Easy DIY Gift Ideas Anyone will Enjoy

By: Katelynn Steinhauser

Homemade gifts are always better...

Especially for that one person who is nearly impossible to buy for. Whether you’re looking for something special for a parent, a boyfriend or girlfriend, your best friend, or your favorite teacher, you'll definitely find something here that you like.

1. Monogrammed Sharpie Mug

This simple and darling gift costs only a few dollars and almost no time at all. You could customize it however you’d like, but the simplest idea is to use letter stickers and then use your pen to draw around them. Peel back the stickers and now you have yourself an impressive looking mug.

2. Candy Bouquet

A bouquet of candy is the perfect gift for someone who is hard to shop for! Who doesn’t love candy, right? Simply get a jar or small basket, pick out any candy of your choosing, throw it (nicely) into the desired container, and finish it off with a nice ribbon!

3. Bottle O' Memories

If you’re looking for something a little more personal or sentimental, this is it! Fill a bottle with mini items that remind you of the person receiving the gift or of things you have both done together over the years.

The Scorch Trials Review

By: Ryan Karr

In “The Scorch Trials” Wes Ball fails to portray the gripping sequel to “The Maze Runner.” This movie was a complete failure in more ways than one.

Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), and the rest of the Gladers are taken by their unknown rescuers to a compound in the desert where, according to their guides, they are “safe.” Almost immediately, things go wrong. Meeting a kid named Aris (Jacob Lofland) and many others, they learn that they were not in the only maze. In fact, according to the movie, there were at least ten or twelve different mazes. Newt (Thomas Brodie Sangster) and Minho (Ki Hong Lee) believe their rescuers promise of freedom, but after Teresa is taken for a long time Thomas starts to doubt. Aris and Thomas discover that their “saviors” are actually WCKD members.

The Gladers along with Aris escape the compound and flee into the desert. Chased by WCKD leader Janson (Aidan Gillen) and the newly discovered “cranks,” the Gladers are hounded at every turn. With the help of the mysterious Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito) and Brenda (Rosa Salazar) they manage to reach the “safe haven.” [1] However, before long, WCKD finds them and overruns the camp. Teresa betrays the Gladers and joins Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson). WCKD takes Minho and leaves what is left of the resistance after a fierce standoff that ends in chaos.

This movie, despite its extreme action, completely drops the book’s plot and proceeds to demolish everything people loved about “The Scorch Trials.” This is not a movie that I would recommend to anyone who read and enjoyed the books.

I’m a little confused by this sentence.

Politics and News

Paris in Chaos

By: Jacob Hootman

Section Editor’s Note – This is the first article of the Political Section of the Steele Post. Please email me if you find anything factually wrong with the article. Thanks, Jacob Hootman.

Earlier this week, a heinous terrorist attack occurred in Paris. As of Wednesday, November 18th, 129 French citizens are dead and another 430 were wounded. This was the most widely reported of the various terrorist attacks occurring on Friday the 13th. In Lebanon, a twin suicide bombing occurred the same day. The Islamic State, more commonly known as ISIS or Daesh, has claimed responsibility and called the attack a “ghazwa”, or religious raid. At the Stade de France, bombs exploded and harmed several outside. At the Bataclan Concert Hall, 89 were slaughtered in cold blood. Nations around the world have been quick to condemn Daesh, but have also taken precautions against further terrorist attacks. Some Conservative leaders within the United States and elsewhere say that the refugees from Syria and other parts of the Middle East may have terrorists embedded within them. States have been closed to refugees, and Poland notably reneged on its deal with the European Union to take 20,000 refugees. These actions only heighten the conflict which has been brewing for months in Southern Europe. Furthermore, France declared a state of emergency, effectively initiating martial law, and closed their borders. Many have condemned and praised their actions. The stark contrast in opinions within the US gives way to the deepening divide between Democrats and Republicans. At these times, we must break through our petty partisan differences to a united front against the evil and demonic organization of Daesh. The Steele Post offers its condolences to the families of the slain and injured.
