Report Card Conferences

If you have not already done so, please reach out to your child's teacher to sign up for a slot to discuss their progress for this reporting period.

You will receive an electronic copy of your child’s report card at this conference. We believe that it is vital for teachers and parents to work together as a team to discuss student progress at Northwood. We are expecting 100% participation from our families.

As a reminder, conferences will take place on Thursday, December 17, from 3:00 to 5:45 pm and Friday, December 18, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Conferences will be 15 minutes in duration. All report card conferences will be held on these two days.

Report card conferences will be held in a virtual format via Zoom. You will receive a Zoom link from your child’s teacher. Please be prompt so that you and all families have equal opportunity to discuss their child’s progress.

If you are interested in meeting with a specialist teacher, please email them individually to set up a conference.

Resources & Fun from the Magic Workshop

We were happy to see all K-2 grades' active participation in the interactive magic show last week! Our hosts wanted to pass along the resources below, which are appropriate for children in every grade:

The following links contain FREE PDF versions of hands-on magic books:

  • Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic by Mark Wilson: The ultimate book of magic for kids from a world-famous magician, complete with photographs for easy to follow instructions.
  • Now You See It, Now You Don't by Bill Tarr: A new and simple learn-by-picture method that makes it easy for kids to perform all the classic sleights just as they are done by the world's greatest professional magicians.
If your family would like to see a magician perform a formal show locally, Smoke and Mirrors Magic Theater was recommended. They are located in Huntingdon Valley and they are offering limited socially distanced seating (due to COVID-19) for live shows which are also live-streamed so that you have the option of attending in person or virtually. Their website is https://smokeandmirrorstheater.com

Last but not least, be dazzled by second-grader Gloria Melone making a coin disappear!

Grades 3-5 and 6-8 Assemblies: December 16th

Assemblies for our middle and upper grades are happening next week! Both of the following interactive engagements will take place on Wednesday, December 16th at 1:30 pm.

Grades 3-5: The bGreat Show

Through magic, comedy, story-telling, and audience participation, students will learn about Anti-Bullying, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Citizenship.

Grades 6-8: Diversity of Dance

Students will be exposed to the impact of globalization and the power of embracing cultural diversity through dance. Students will be taken on a journey of dance through Jamaica, South Korea, Latin America, and India, learning about the creation and transformation of hip-hop throughout the world.

*Bulldog Spotlight* Theme: Holiday Happiness

With the winter holiday season right around the corner, festive delights are now starting to fill the air. Even while keeping a safe distance this year, the colorful sights, cheerful sounds, and comforting smells will still bring a special spark to the crisp city air.

This month, we want to know: what is your child's favorite part of the holiday season?

Is it the taste of freshly baked gingerbread cookies, straight out of the oven? Or maybe it's building the first snowman of the season? Send their answer and a photo of their smiling face (feel free to get creative here to incorporate the theme) to Mrs. Smith at jsmith@northwoodcs.org. The most stand-out submissions will be featured in the Bulldog Blast sent out during the last week before Winter Recess.

Tracking COVID-19 in Pennsylvania / Philadelphia

Following the recommendation of the PA Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, it is our intent to remain remote in January.

In order to change to a Hybrid Model, we must see 3 consecutive weeks of data in the Low or Moderate category in the COVID-19 Dashboard, accompanied by 3 weeks of the CHOP PolicyLab projections on a steady decline. We will continue to share these data points with you through this newsletter each week.

Click on each of the charts below to go to the data tracking pages compiled by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia PolicyLab.
