Staff guidance: A message from Human Resources
On March 15, Governor Walz issued an Executive Order that directed all school districts to use the days between March 18 and 27 to prepare our schools to deliver distance learning to our students. This is a significant undertaking which will take effort, organization and planning, and I am confident our district is up to the task. The current school closure period is scheduled to end Friday, March 27, but we have been told to anticipate and be prepared for an extended period of distance learning.
The original guidance to school districts was to have all staff report to work in order to begin planning and preparing for distance learning. That guidance was given before there was evidence of the virus spreading in the community. Now, given the rapidly changing state of COVID-19, the new guidance is focused on community mitigation.
The Center of Disease Control (CDC) has recommended the following guidance for the workplace:
Encourage staff to work remotely (when feasible), particularly individuals at increased risk of severe illness.
Implement social distancing measures:
Increasing physical space between workers at the worksite
Staggering work schedules
Decreasing social contacts in the workplace (e.g., limit in-person meetings, meeting for lunch in a break room, etc.)
Limit large work-related gatherings (e.g., staff meetings, after-work functions).
Limit non-essential work travel.
Consider regular health checks (e.g., temperature and respiratory symptom screening) of staff and visitors entering buildings (if feasible).
Working during school closure: March 23-27.
Working conditions for employees will be altered for some employees, and the respective employees will be informed of plans and any changes that will affect their work and attendance at work. All hourly employees will continue to receive their current pay and benefits during this time.
Teachers: Teachers will prepare starting Monday, March 23. All group meetings will be moved to virtual meetings. Each site will send out a site-specific schedule. We understand that individuals may need to access our schools and classrooms in order to get supplies, materials, personal effects and devices such as laptops or Chromebooks which you will need in order to participate in virtual meetings and deliver distance learning. You are welcome to do that, but while in the building you will be expected to practice all social-distancing recommendations and join any virtual meetings from the comfort of your individual classroom or another isolated area.
Paraeducators: Paraeducators are not being asked to report to their site on Monday, March 23. Administrators and union leadership will collaborate on long-term plans for assignments. Many will be working outside of their classification area as needs change and emerge, further communication and guidance will be sent by site for the remainder of the week.
Clerical: Clerical staff will be asked to report as requested by their site principal/administrator. Long-term plans and working arrangements will be coordinated with their direct supervisor.
Nutrition Services: Nutrition Services staff will be needed to prepare meals for children who need them during these times. Expectations of staff will be provided by the Nutrition Services Department Leads.
Health Services: Some Health Services staff will be needed to help with medication distribution and for supporting childcare. Expectations of staff will be provided by the Licensed School Nurses and Health Coordinator.
Custodians: All custodians will be asked to continue to work their regular scheduled shift.
Community Ed Staff: Coordinators, Managers, Supervisors and Specialists will continue to work as regularly scheduled or at the direction of their supervisor. Building Supervisors should not report to work and will be contacted with updates via email.
District Staff, Equity Specialists, Technology Staff: All staff will be asked to continue to work as regularly scheduled or at the direction of their supervisor.
Do not report to work or come to the building if . . .
Returning from traveling from a high-risk area:
As recommended from the CDC depending on your travel history, you will be asked to stay home for a period of 14 days from the time you left an area with widespread or ongoing community spread (Level 3 Travel Health Notice).
If you are ill
Please stay home if you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 (including fever, cough, shortness of breath). MDH is now asking individuals with these symptoms to remain home for a minimum of 7 days. Click here for further guidance from MDH about what to do if you’re feeling ill and when to consult your healthcare provider.
Returning from a cruise
As of 3/17, if you are returning from a cruise, the CDC is asking that you stay home for 14 days, monitor your health, and practice social distancing.
