Spring Break & More Rain
Well, week 1 of matches didn't get off to much of a start with all the inclement weather, but we did manage to pull off a victory against FHN! I told the team, in my opinion, tennis is about 50% athletic ability, 30% specific tennis skills, & 20% mental toughness (at least at the HS level). Many of us rearranged those percentages in our first match and it appeared as if 50% of the game was mental toughness. Let's hope we can chalk it up to opening match jitters, but we work too hard at practice to not believe in our abilities. Remember, we "practice like we've never won, and play like we've never lost". You have to go into any match believing.
This week on the non-match days we will attempt to have practice from 8-10am. The weather forecast doesn't look good or promising. Please stay tuned on the GroupChat and Twitter for immediate updates. Team pictures will be rescheduled to an unknown date.
The Family Snack Sign-Up is mostly full with the tournaments being the only exceptions. These will mostly involve Top 12 players so if you guys can get signed up ASAP that would be great. If the match you signed up for gets rescheduled I will assume (unless I am told otherwise), you will pick up the new date.
Fingers-crossed we get a match in this week!

ACE OF THE WEEK: Varun Jeevan
The Character Aspect
Now that we have gotten through tryouts and preliminary ranking, every week I will be highlighting a player that represents our RISE Core Values and/or demonstrates a great deal mental toughness and quality character. We will have regular discussions about being a good teammate, person, peer, and player.
This week's ACE is VARUN JEEVAN. Mental toughness is hard to teach. Some have it and some really have to work for it. Varun finds a way to stay positive in any adverse situation I have witnessed him in. Windy days are rough for a tennis player and can really equalize a match. Varun lost his first set and he could have just gave up from there, but he didn't. He battled back to win his 2nd set to play for a 10pt TB, which he won 13-11 after being 1 point away from losing several times. With his victory, he locked in our team 'W' over FHN. Positive energy is contagious...teammates like Varun are necessary for exactly that reason.
Updated Team Rank Order
TEAM DUTIES
Every week I will be assigning practice helpers. These will involve you putting away and getting out the ball hoppers (as well as making sure they are locked up). If we get out Tina or Trixie I will likely have you assist in this as well.
