Prevent the Summer Slide-READ!
BMS Reads & Learns During Summer Vacation - 2019
Biddeford Middle School Summer Reading & Learning
Did you know that students can actually lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year over summer vacation? Researchers call this the "summer slide."

Together as a community, we can help prevent the summer slide by providing summer learning opportunities for our students. Here are a few summer tips to try:
- Take your child to the library. McArthur Library is offering an exciting summer learning program for teens. Your child may have brought home the program's BINGO board. You can also download the materials at https://mcarthurlibrary.wordpress.com/.
- Encourage your child to pack books or magazines on short or long trips this summer. This is a great way to create some balance between reading and screen time!
- Listen to audio books or podcasts together. With many free resources available for download, students can listen to stories and informational texts on their devices. Then encourage them to talk about what they heard or learned. This helps support listening comprehension and vocabulary development.
- Invite your child to spend time practicing learned skills with programs they have used at school. Each BMS student has access to a paid subscription to IXL Math, an online math program that provides math practice at each child's math readiness level.
