EL Program Updates

Staying Connected and Up-to-Date December 2015

District 279's EL Program has grown!

We have experienced a lot of change this year!

  • 16 new EL teachers
  • Many "veteran" EL staff have moved to new buildings
  • New EL programs in 7 schools
  • Grade level shifts and change to middle school model

As we grow and change, it is harder and harder to stay connected.

The purpose of this newsletter is to provide important updates to staff in our EL department. Additionally, we hope to use this platform to build connections among our staff. For starters, we will create a visual directory featuring a picture and short bio of each EL Staff member. You should have received an email from Josh Smith about this. Our January EL Program Updates will include a link to this directory.

ELLevation--Reminders and Tips

This fall you assigned a teacher to each EL student and identified language goals. Other information you entered might have included some details about services such as the student's EL schedule. Some staff printed the service plans and shared them during fall conferences. What's next?

You should plan to mark progress towards goals at the end of each trimester. You also have another opportunity share goals and service plans with parents at winter conferences. There are also a number of reports that can be created using ELLevation. Below are some resources to help you get started! Josh or Jeanne are also available to help--just invite us over!

We are still working to get regular information updates into ELLevation; in the meantime we are doing a lot of data entry manually as students come and go. Heblin, our EL ESP at the ENR, has been working to clean up ELLevation these past weeks. At this time, the students listed should be accurate--if not, let us know. Be sure to filter for ACTIVE=YES and STATUS=EL. Those filters will allow you to view just your current EL students.

ACCESS for ELLs 2.0

ACCESS goes online this year. As details about training and preparing are shared, it will be important to stay informed and on track with preparations. Kiersten Nicholson sent an email with important information for EL teachers on December 7.

All staff who will administer ACCESS 2.0 or the Kindergarten ACCESS are required to complete Test Administrator certification. There are some opportunities to complete that training in a group session, or you can do so independently as outlined in Kiersten's email.

Upcoming training opportunities for TEST ADMINISTRATORS*:

  • Tuesday, December 22, 9-11 a.m. ACCESS 2.0 Online for Grades 1-12
  • Tuesday, January 12 4:15-6:15 p.m. Kindergarten ACCESS training

Please sign up for sessions on Keep Certified.

*Site Assessment Coordinators (SACs) and building computer support staff are required to attend two training sessions concerning test security and hands-on computer training. In some cases, EL Teachers have been identified as the SAC for ACCESS 2.0 by their principal. SACs received an email from Joanne Frei on November 17 about these trainings.

All training will take place at the ESC

11200 93rd Avenue North

Maple Grove, MN 55369
