Mrs. Hankins' 5th Grade News
What's Happening in the Classroom!
Thank you for sharing your child with me every single day. I enjoy each one of them so much! Here's what we've been working on!
Spelling: We are currently working on shwa unaccented endings (el, en), and will be moving into words with prefixes next week.
Reading: We have been reading Tall tales, discussing figurative language, and point of view/author's perspective. They have also been writing to one and two sources using an answering strategy called RACE (Restate the question in your answer, Answer the Question, Cite evidence, Explain/conclude)
Writing: We are currently working on the opinion genre. They are giving their opinion from a Native American's perspective in the 17th century, in regards to allowing the Spanish to settle.
Math: We are continuing to review adding/subtracting fractions and moving into dividing and multiplying fractions first starting with visuals (models) to show a concrete version of the "why" behind standard algorithms. If you have questions or would like to view any methods, please let me know. Or, your child has an account on zearn.com that they can access from home, which will give insight to our math curriculum.
Science: We have been learning about landforms and their causes. This next week will be going into renewable/nonrenewable resources.
REMINDERS
- Please, make sure your child is reading out loud with you for at least 20 minutes every night and sign their planner after each read - I'm looking for a signature of bulldog planner and then initials for reading. Reading aloud improves fluency and gives a chance for word corrections. We have been seeing a school-wide trend of mispronouncing small words (the, is, on, in, etc.).
- Please, practice basic multiplication facts. There is also occasional math homework that will be going home. Not a huge amount (2-4 problems at most), just to keep skills fresh in their minds.
- No School: Friday, February 8th
- Parent Teacher Conferences are around the Corner! (Tuesday, Feb. 11 & Thursday, Feb. 13) - Times will be going home in Bulldog Books next week, so be watching for them!
Happy Birthday to:
Naithan
Delaney
David
We'd love to celebrate half birthdays for the summer birthday kiddos! Please let me know if you'd like to do that!
