Ms. Hookway's Music Class
February Newsletter for Music at Oaklawn Elementary School
All That Jazz!
This past month Oaklawn had a real treat! The Newport Jazz Assembly came to play for the students. Their presentation included different styles of jazz music including bee bop, big band jazz, and swing. The students had a great time listening and dancing along. Some students even got to join the band during their last song with some small percussion instruments!
What's happening in the classroom?
Peter and the Wolf
Our second graders have finished their unit on instrument families. To wrap up the unit they will be watching "Peter and the Wolf". A story about a little boy and his adventures in the meadow one day. The music was composed by Sergie Prokofiev and he wrote a musical theme for each character.
Kindergarten Musical
This month I will be working with the kindergarten teachers to pick a musical for the kindergarten students to learn and perform at the end of the school year. A performance date has not yet be picked. I will keep all kindergarten parents posted as soon as I have more information.
Body Percussion Compositions
Our first graders will be composing their own body percussion pieces. They will use shapes to represent either stomping, patting, clapping, or snapping. They will compose their pieces next week and then perform them for the class before taking them home.
Congratulations 4th Grade!
Our 4th graders presented their musical "Math Rocks!" to students and parents on January 22nd. They did a phenomenal job singing and dancing during both performances. We were all so proud of them! Great job 4th grade!
