What we are learning
Sight Words and Words Their Way.
Sight Words-We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Monday. The words for List 17 are right, put, too, where, play . We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words. Many students had problems with the words know, don't and how. We have students forgetting to put the apostrophe in don't, spelling know as no, and how as haw.
Word Their Way- We did a spelling inventory with your child in December to check their mid-year progress. We used this information to regroup the students, so you may see a different type of sort coming home than last semester. Please do not have your child glue word or picture items to their sorting mats until Thursday. They need to be moving the pieces around. Students are bring sorts back with pictures glued to them on Tuesday. This makes us sad. They are practicing moving the pictures or words over and over again. They do need to have a sort set for home. They will have another one for school. On test day the spelling teacher will provide a 3rd sort set.
Reading- Please continue to read at home for at least 20 minutes each night. Also, I-station is always a fun way for them to practice reading skills while playing fun games. We would appreciate it if you would have your child log in this weekend.
Language Arts- we have started a unit on media literacy and we will be exploring all different mediums in which authors can communicate by speaking and writing, such as newspapers, magazines, television, music, internet, etc. We will also dive into author's purpose for communicating and we will focus on writing to inform or entertain. Student will be asked to differentiate between the two, as well as produce some written communication with the specific purpose to inform and/or entertain.
Social Studies we will continue learning about different landforms and bodies of water. We will use play doh to create different types of landforms to identify and describe their unique characteristics.
Math - We will be learning about coins this week. We will be introducing the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter and teaching students to identify them by name and value. We will also be practicing counting groups of coins to find the value with fluency. Please encourage your child to count groups of coins at home for extra practice
Science - We will be learning all about the weather and training to be meteorologists. This week we looked at different types of weather and tools that we use to measure temperature, rainfall and wind direction. Next week we will be continuing on by using different weather tools to record and measure weather. We will also be building vocabulary by learning weather words such as; hot, cold, temperature, thermometer, windy, sunny, rainy, cloudy.
Making Reading Fun!
Hot and Cold!
Bad Weather-Snow and Ice
As we move into winter, it is important to know the school districts winter weather procedures. In the event of winter weather, the administration will consider the safety of our 53,000+ students and more than 6,000 employees in our 127-square mile district when making decisions about school closures.
LISD administrators will determine school cancellations or delays based on the safety of all students and staff district-wide.
If school is cancelled or delayed due to a weather-related event, parents and staff members will be notified via multiple platforms, including LISD’s parent callout system (Skylert), websites – including all campus websites – Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. For the most instantaneous notification, visit our website and/or follow us on Twitter.
Please know that LISD is working diligently to keep you informed as quickly as possible, but know that some forms of notification may be slightly delayed due to the demands of mass messaging.
As always, LISD will keep parents, students and community members informed with the most up-to-date information through these communication platforms. LISD thanks you in advance for your patience in the event of a winter weather situation.
Cold and Flu Season is HERE!
Your child’s health is of great importance. It is that time of year when colds, flu and viruses run wild in schools, churches, and other public places. We will take every precaution to have a healthy and safe environment. Please consider getting a flu shot for yourself and your child. Having the flu is not any fun and can be life threatening for young children.
We would like you to consider keeping your child home if they have fever, diarrhea and vomiting. It is requested that students be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please don't give your child a fever reducer and send them to school. Our bodies create a fever to fight viruses and to give us a warning that we are sick. When you send a child to school sick you will be impacting 20 plus families in addition to the teachers and their families. Teachers don't like missing days of school due to illness.
If your child becomes ill while at school, we will take them to the school nurse. The nurse will evaluate your child and will contact you to let you know if you need to pick your child up. Please keep in mind the only person on campus that can give any medication is our school nurse
