Bulldog Bulletin
Elementary School- November, 2022
Hello HCS Families!
Dear HCS Families,
We have had a fantastic month here- it’s been incredibly busy, and the progress the students are making has been astounding! Staff is collaborating more than ever and our entire team is excited to share with you, the growth your children have shown. It's hard to believe next week is the end of marking period 1. Teachers will be reaching out to schedule parent-teacher conferences, which will take place on November 18th, 21st, and 22nd. Please note that all of these days are half days for elementary students. Report cards will also be issued and discussed at conferences.
Instructionally, our students have been getting all of the help they need to be successful. We have completed assessing students for fall growth measures in reading and math and have collected information to help guide instruction. Coaches, intervention providers and classroom teachers have had the opportunity to meet as grade level teams to review the data for each and every student. Fall assessments also help to determine individual and small group needs for instructional differentiation (on, above, or below grade level), intervention, and enrichment.
We have also been focusing on our Bulldog 4:
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Kind
- Be Safe
Sincerely,
Natalie Pfluke
Become an HCS Volunteer
We are so excited to have volunteers back in the building! Volunteers are an invaluable resource to a school district. If you are interested and willing to donate your time and energy to assist teachers and other school personnel in implementing various pages of school programs, we would love to have you!
To become a volunteer you must first fill out the application for approval. Only those volunteers approved and included on the district’s list of approved volunteers may work in the district. In order to make the most of your valuable time, here are some guidelines for volunteering and chaperoning:
Student confidentiality must be maintained at all times.
Please arrive at school 5-10 minutes ahead of your appointed time in the classroom.
Please sign in at the Elementary Office to receive a Visitor Badge for identification as a volunteer. You will need to bring your license with you if this is your first time.
If you are not feeling well, or need to cancel for any reason, please notify the teacher as soon as possible.
Chaperones ride the bus both to and from all field trips.
Please limit cell phone use to emergencies only, as we will need your eyes on the children.
This is NYS law - Any medications, including over-the-counter, can be administered by school personnel only.
A reminder that field trips are an extension of the school itself. Tobacco, alcohol, vapes and firearms are prohibited.
If you are chaperoning a field trip, the school will provide the students with what they need. Chaperones are not permitted to purchase food or items for the students they are assigned to.
Classroom teachers will reach out to you individually to share opportunities for volunteering and chaperoning. On behalf of the Elementary School, we look forward to working with you and appreciate your partnership for all students.
Thank you Richmond Fire Dept. for your demonstrations on fire safety and prevention!
Book Fair- coming soon!
The best way to have some #bookjoy cheer is to shop the Scholastic Book Fair HERE!
It's coming to town November 14th - 18th, and 21st & 22nd and will be located in the PL Suite (classroom on the right as you head towards the nurse's office from the Elementary Office). Details will be coming soon from our 5th Grade Elementary Library Club on specifics of times and events happening throughout those Book Fair dates. Special thank you ahead to those who are volunteering their time to help with the Book Fair. Any questions about this - email jdeal@honeoye.org!
We look forward to seeing you there!

Learning through discussion
Bridges
Teachers continue to implement Bridges in Mathematics, where students are actively engaged in exploring, discussing, and asking questions to develop math skills, find multiple ways to solve problems, and show different ways of thinking. On any given day during a math lesson, students may be playing math games, taking measurements in the hallway, creating ratio tables with bicycles or popsicle sticks, and collaborating with peers to build models for selling baseballs. I am amazed at the level of engagement we are seeing each and every day!

NOVEMBER: GRATITUDE AND THANKFULNESS
Gratitude is good for us! This month, students will be striving for a Gratitude Attitude. Teachers
will be engaging students in conversation and reflection activities to help students move into a more genuine exploration of gratitude--beyond lists of what we are thankful for. Check out this resource for an article about nurturing gratitude!

Dignity for All Students
At HCS, incidents of discrimination/harassment are taken very seriously and are not tolerated. Please be sure to notify me or your child's teacher immediately to ensure that we are aware of the concern and are able to address, without delay, situations related to discrimination and/or harassment.
The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) (§§10-18 of Education Law) defines harassment as the creation of a hostile environment by conduct or by verbal threats, intimidation or abuse that has or would have the effect of unreasonably and substantially interfering with a student’s educational performance, opportunities or benefits, or mental, emotional or physical well-being; or conduct, verbal threats, intimidation or abuse that reasonably causes or would reasonably be expected to cause a student to fear for his or her physical safety. The harassing behavior may be based on any characteristic, including but not limited to a person’s actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or gender (including gender identity and expression).
We have trained DASA coordinators at our schools who are available and able to support you and your family. If you need more information, please reach out to the elementary office at any time.
Thank you,
Natalie Pfluke

Attendance
Going to school regularly matters for your child’s success and achievement!
Every year, school absences spike in the weeks before and after winter break, as families squeeze a few more days of vacation out of the holiday season. As long as your child is healthy, please encourage showing up to class when school is in session. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as connect to peers and their teachers.
Consistent attendance in school is critical to student achievement. Let’s work together to make sure that your child does not fall behind this school year. Please ensure that your child attends school every day and also arrives on time so they benefit as much as possible from what is taught in the classroom.
Please let us know how we can work with you to ensure your child is here each and every day. If your family or your child need support, please reach out to the Main Office (585) 229-5171 Ext. 3018 or the Counseling Department at (585) 229-5171 Ext. 3020.
