Character Counts!
Congratulations to all of our Character Counts winners for First Quarter who demonstrated Responsibility and Respect! We had our first school-wide assembly to recognize these students on November 12th. Students are nominated each quarter by their teacher for demonstrating the Character Traits we celebrate each month. Students who are recognized also receive a certificate, a Character tag to be added to their chain, and parents are invited to attend the assembly.
We will focus on the Character Trait of Gratitude in November. This means to show appreciation for people and things in your life and to give thanks. This month, we will be showing our appreciation for local military service members by inviting these members into our school on November 22nd. They will be visiting each classroom and either reading to or with our students. We are so thankful for their service and for their partnership with this activity!
The PATHS program is in full swing at Waverley. As a reminder, this is a county-wide Social Emotional Learning Program. Perhaps, you have heard your child talk about this program at home by talking about various topics such as expressing feelings or problem solving. Your child may have also been a "PATHS Kid of the Day!" If they haven't been yet, don't worry! Each child will have this special opportunity to be showcased within the classroom. We are fortunate to be able to integrate this program into our school as it is so valuable and necessary in educating the whole child. Please reach out to Kandi Macauley, School Counselor, with any questions. Thanks for your support!
Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) Pointers
There is a strong connection between proper sleep and a student’s ability to self-regulate, make good decisions and interact positively with peers! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 9-12 hours of sleep for children ages 6-12. You can help your child by establishing a bedtime routine. Part of this routine should include turning off all electronics at least 30 before bedtime because the light emitted from a tablet, phone, TV or laptop mimics sunlight. Too much time in front of a screen at night tricks the brain into thinking it’s morning.
Healthy Hints from the Health Room
When should I keep my child home?
- Temperature of more than 100
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Persistent Stomachache
- Diarrhea
- Pale or flush face
- Headache
- Persistent Cough
- Thick non clear discharge from the nose
- Painful sore throat
- Rash or skin infection
- Red or pink eyes
- Tiredness
If these symptoms continue for more than 24 hours, you should contact your child’s provider. If your child comes to school with any of the listed symptoms and is sent in the health room, we may call you to pick your child up. Please make sure the school has up to date contact information. It is important that we are able to reach every parent by phone or Email.
Communication is important!
- Your child must be fever-free without fever reducing medications for 24-hours before returning to school.
- Please feel free to bring your child to the health room before school starts if your child is sick and you are not sure if they should be in school or not.
- If you child is sick and will not be in school please send in a note when the child returns to school for the missed dates.
- If your child is sick and you do not have a primary care physician or insurance please contact the health room as we do have a service you may apply for to make sure your child is seen and well.
- Also if your child has visited the health room they are sent back to class with a green note to present to the parent as to why they visited the health room that day
