A Pre Xmas Treat

For our last Sunday Lunch for the year we have arranged a wonderful meal in one of the most glorious and historic buildings in Rotorua. The hotel is under new management & is being refurbished.

This hotel was, during the gold-rush era, the New Central Hotel in Waihi. At that time, the proprietors of another large hotel, the Rob Roy, put up the price of beer. Drinkers threatened to boycott the hotel & even (tongue in cheek, no doubt) to vote for Prohibition at the upcoming election. Most miners could not bring themselves to do so, but did not vote at all to express their dissatisfaction. They forgot that their wives (who were fed up with the men’s boozing) had just gained the vote. When the votes were counted Prohibition was in; Ohinemuri County was Dry! A “Booze Express” to Thames, stopping at Hikutaia was started. Eventually, after other eventualities which affected trade negatively, the New Central Hotel was shifted to Rotorua & its name changed.
