Bellerose Bulletin
April 2022
A Message from our Admin
Dear Families,
Welcome back to school after a well-deserved Spring Break. It is our hope that all families had a chance to relax and rejuvenate during the week away from classes. As our days continue to get warmer and the snow melts away, we look forward to all that the final three months of the school year have to offer.
As you know, prior to Spring break we completed our registration and course selection process for the 2022-2023 school year. If for any reason you have not yet completed your registration or, you know of families who are still interested in coming to Bellerose, we encourage this to be completed as soon as possible to ensure course availability for students.
It is a busy time of year and we appreciate all that the staff, students and community do that continue to make Bellerose such an amazing place to be.
Happy Spring,
Dawn, Jen, Mike & Cam

Updates to Covid Communication
On Monday, March 7th, our school shifted to reporting covid cases to families only when clusters of cases were present in a particular class. As the numbers of positive cases in our area (and our school) have continued to decline, effective April 4th, we will be pausing further case reporting to families.
The health and safety of our students remains our highest priority and, as such, we will continue to re-evaluate and adjust our procedures accordingly.

The IB Corner
Welcome to another edition of the IB corner…
This month, I would like to use this space to inform our school community about assessment in the IB Diploma Programme. Our crew of excellent teachers and staff work to employ varied forms of assessment to, among other purposes, diagnose student skill level, tell students how much they know, encourage self-improvement, and report their progress to you, their parents and guardians. At the end of each grade 11 and 12 IB course that students take, they receive a percentage grade in their Alberta High School Equivalent Course based on these classroom measures.
In a separate process, students also receive grades ranging from 7 to 1, with 7 being highest from the International Baccalaureate Organization – their IB grade. Students receive an IB grade for each DP course attempted. Assessment in the IB is based on a mix of internal assessment (IA) and external assessment.
External assessments are graded by trained IB examiners and include written examinations. In Visual arts and Film, external assessment is in the form of student created works. Students pursuing an IB diploma also have to complete an externally assessed piece of independent research, the extended essay. Mr. Clayton Beebe, our extended essay supervisor, would like to give a special shout-out to his students who just completed their papers by sharing their topics!
Nadia Baxandall "How does Michael Ondaatje use the motif of trauma to explore experiences of the Second World War through the novel The English Patient?"
Mekdes Gebrigzaber "How does bottom trawling and cyanide fishing in and around coral reefs affect the environment and its sustainability?"
Alyssa Wong "What were the most prominent strategies used by Hitler, Mao and Stalin to consolidate their respective 20th century totalitarian regimes?"
Internal assessment refers to an individual assessment that the subject teacher evaluates with a list of criteria and focuses on some subject-related work. Internal assessment tasks range from personal scientific investigations to individual conversations in a second language. This type of assessment is where, in my mind, the philosophy of the DP comes to light. Internal assessment enables students to demonstrate their knowledge and pursue their interests without the constraints associated with written examinations. As we head into the last months of the school year, our grade 12 students will be busy writing May examinations, while our grade 11 students begin investigating topics of personal interest that will set them on a path to completing their IA's. I wish them and their teachers the best of luck.
Clayton
