PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Welcome to 2022!


As we kick off the new year, we would like to thank everyone for their perseverance as we continue to deal with COVID and the ever-changing educational landscape. We are hopeful that our move to remote learning will be the last time that we have to adjust our daily schedule. Please be sure to maintain strong lines of communication with your child's teachers during the remote session. The Office Hours sessions in the afternoon are extremely helpful for supporting students that may need additional assistance with the remote environment. Below you will find the Office Hours schedule for each block. Once again, we thank you for your support and patience during the remote learning period.


The new year is upon us and we are ready to begin the second semester at Medford. Students and teachers are preparing for their first semester final exams and anticipating their new courses which will begin on February 2nd! Please be sure to review the District Calendar link below for upcoming events and dates.


Credit Make Up sessions will be starting the week of January 24th (See Info Below). Be sure to review with your son/daughter any attendance concerns that you may have. Also, please contact your child's guidance counselor if you have any questions.


Scheduling for next year will be begin in the upcoming months, so please discuss with your child their post secondary plans. BCIT provides our students several different options upon graduation, it is never too early to have the discussion with your child and their guidance counselor.


The second semester is filled with student events and activities, so be sure to visit the school calendar for important dates and events. As always, feel free to contact our staff for any questions that you may have regarding your child’s education.

MASK REMINDER

In accordance with Executive Order No. 251, all BCIT faculty, staff, and students and visitors will have to wear masks inside any district building and where appropriate outside based on guidance provided by the NJDOE on August 20, 2021 Health and Safety Updates. When masks are worn, they must cover the mouth and nose at all times while on campus, both inside and outside on district property. Proper guidelines for wearing masks are subject to change pursuant to the recommendations provided by the CDC, BCDOH, and the Office of the Governor of New Jersey. Gaitors and shields may not be used as a substitute or replacement for masks unless prior approval is received due to circumstances which may impact the health, safety, or medical condition of a BCIT faculty, staff, or student.


Masks MUST be worn at all times when on a bus!!!

QUARANTINED STUDENTS & ATTENDANCE

Students who are required to quarantine due to a positive COVID test or a Close Contact to a confirmed positive COVID test will be required to follow their schedules virtually via Google Meet. The school nurse, Donna Baptiste, will officially place students on our Quarantine List and will communicate this information to parents and the appropriate staff members to inform them on the exclusion. Students will receive full credit for the day if they attend all their classes for the day including homeroom.


Students that are not on the Quarantine List or do not meet the attendance policy for an excused absence will be marked as an Unexcused Absence in Genesis. Please refer to the district attendance policy for the list of approved absences.


Quarantine and Instruction:


Students who are told to quarantine will be required to log into each class for the duration of the period. Online students can:

  • Listen to lectures or small group discussions

  • Work independently on assignments

  • Participate in classroom discussions virtually


Expectations for Attendance:

  • The school nurse will identify students who need to quarantine and alert the teachers regarding the start and end dates.

  • Students who are identified as needing to quarantine by the school will be provided with online instruction. Students are only permitted to attend virtual classes if they are quarantined.

  • Students are expected to log into their homeroom at 8:20 and attend all classes in order to receive credit for the school day.

  • Classwork and assignments will be due by the end of the block or as assigned by each teacher.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Please be mindful of our attendance policy as we move into a new semester


Every student is expected to be in school every day, all day.


  • Should the student be absent in excess of six unexcused days per semester, then he/she will be placed on non-credit status.
  • Students who exceed a total of nine or more days with excused or unexcused absences from school for the semester will not be eligible for noncredit remediation, and may be referred to the Superintendent for consideration for referral to the Board of Education for action.
  • Partial absences caused by lateness to school or early departure from school will be counted toward non-credit. Each partial absence will be equal to at least .25 of a day. Four (4) such partial absences shall equal one (1) day absence for the purpose of non-credit.
  • All excused absences require written documentation to verify the nature of the absence. Parent letters excusing a student for attendance purposes are not acceptable. Medical notes need to be from a medical professional. Please review the policy below regarding approved excused days. If your son/daughter is dealing with a prolonged medical issue, please communicate with your guidance counselor and we can work together to develop a plan.

GOOD VIBES

The Good Vibes Ambassadors Club handed out over 150 packed lunches to the homeless population of Philadelphia. Every person we delivered meals to was so appreciative for this gesture of love. This would not have been possible without the support and generous donations from our amazing staff. We also want to send out a special thank you to Buildings & Grounds as well as Chef Saxton and Chef Allenbach for kindly allowing us to use their Culinary kitchen. We hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.

CLOSINGS & DELAYED OPENINGS

In the event of a campus emergency or inclement weather, guardians will be contacted via email, phone message, and text message. In addition, we will post a Special Alert Message on our website.


Parents and guardians will be contacted using information stored in Genesis, our electronic student database. Please be sure to keep your contact information up to date. Any changes to your phone number, email address, or home address should be reported to the Counseling Department.

STUDENT ADDRESS/INFORMATION CHANGE FORM

Any address change must be submitted to the School Counseling Department in writing. This is the only way to ensure proper busing information is submitted to transportation. The Student Address/Telephone/Information Change form is available via the BCIT Medford Campus homepage under School Counseling Center.

STUDENT PICK UP DURING SCHOOL HOURS

The safety of our students is our main priority. Guardians and authorized emergency contacts may pick up a student during school hours in the Main Office. When arriving in the Main Office, a driver’s license or state/federal issued I.D. must be presented. Students will not be released to anyone who does not provide proper identification.


Guardians must send written authorization in the form of an email in order to authorize someone who is NOT listed in Genesis to pick up their student. A representative from the main office will also call the main contact(s) to verify the written notification. The email should be sent to mainoffice@burlcoschools.org from the email address listed in Genesis and include the following information:

  • Date

  • Student’s name and grade level

  • Name of the person picking up the student

  • Time and reason of departure

  • Your name and relationship to student

  • Your phone number (phone number must match what is listed in Genesis)


The person being designated to pick up their student must present a driver’s license or state/federal issued I.D. when arriving at the Main Office. Once the email is received, the student will be released.

HOMEWORK CLUB

Afterschool homework club sessions run Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Students can get extra help in Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and Financial Literacy.


Students must sign-up in the Counseling Department at least 24 hours in advance so late buses can be arranged.

BCIT FOUNDATION: PRIDE PROGRAM

PRIDE Program promotes positive academic efforts and behaviors - consider donation to BCIT Education Foundation


PRIDE is a nationally recognized program that supports positive student academic achievement and good behavior. The acronym embodies Personal Responsibility In Daily Effort. For many years, our BCIT Foundation has been very generous in the support of our PRIDE Program at BCIT. BCIT students recognize the PRIDE Program as a way to be acknowledged for putting forth his/her best efforts. Students may earn PRIDE incentives through various avenues such as academic accomplishments, club or sport participation, attendance and good behaviors.


Through monies raised by the BCIT Foundation, the PRIDE Program has provided items that supplement our local BCIT high school budgets. More recently, over the past two school years, the Foundation has provided the following:


  1. Staff member of the month trophies (prohibited by our purchasing manual)
  2. Earned student weekly incentives for PRIDE activities, such as Wawa and Dunkin Donut Gift cards; BCIT water bottles; BCIT PRIDE ear buds
  3. Funding for PRIDE events


This past year, almost 500 students on our Medford Campus and 600 students on the Westampton Campus, per marking period, were recognized as PRIDE recipients. Valuing the need to promote the continual support of the PRIDE Program, the BCIT Foundation's hope is that with the popularity of the PRIDE Program and its proven results, parents, local businesses, and members of the community may consider making a donation to the Foundation.



When giving to the BCIT Foundation in support of the PRIDE Program, donations will directly support PRIDE Program incentives.

SCHOOL COUNSELING CENTER - START OF SEMESTER 2

Just a reminder as we begin Semester 2; any changes to student schedules after the start of the second semester will only be considered for the following reasons:


· A data or statistical error in the schedule, i.e., two subjects in one period, no lunch, wrong grade level for English, etc.

· To meet graduation requirements or mandated program requirements.

· If student failed with scheduled teacher in the previous year and another teacher is available. Where necessary, such changes will be made at counselor discretion, and only after extensive review of the circumstances.

· Improper program/level placement, i.e., student is not in the course(s) as indicated on the course request form.


In all cases, except a clerical or data error, parental permission or parental awareness is necessary in writing before any change can be made. No course may be dropped after the first interim report is issued. Students may not transfer out of any class after four (4) weeks from the beginning of the semester course and after nine (9) weeks from the beginning of a full year course.

Winter is a very important times for you to be visiting college campuses so you know where to apply next September! Campuses give a completely different impression in the summer when they are deserted than during the academic year.

Another good resource for researching scholarships is www.finaid.org .


Paper FAFSAs will no longer be delivered in bulk to high schools. Students are able to obtain a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov for faster processing. A PDF version of the FAFSA is also available for download at www. studentaid.ed.gov.



The US Department of Education sponsors www.studentaid.ed.gov, which provides helpful information on preparing for college, types of financial aid, determining who is eligible for financial aid, how to apply for aid with the FAFSA, and information on repaying your loans.

Our Winter Sports season is in full swing and our teams are participating in various competitions and games across the state. All student-athletes wishing to participate in athletics at Medford Tech must register online. Please check the athletics website regularly for important registration information. All physicals must be submitted to the Nurse's Office at least 3 weeks prior to the start of the sports season in order to participate. The next 3 dates for sports physicals in Nurse Baptiste's office are January 25, February 15, and March 1st.


Please come out and support our Jaguar Athletic Teams. The bowling team competes at Medford Lanes. The boys and girls basketball and cheerleading teams compete in the gymnasium.
