How I Became a Lit Activist: A 5-Step Guide
In November 2017, Katy Independent School District banned The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas from library shelves. NCAC and its partners rallied in defense of the book and kids’ right to read it. But one Texas teen’s activism saved the day by collecting over 4,000 signatures in a petition to restore the book. (From the National Coalition Against Censorship)

A Woman's Life by Farrah Northern
You can be what you see.
A doctor, lawyer, even a marine.
"You have no choice", they say.
But you still do it anyway.
You have the bravery.
The courage, the might.
Don't let them boys
shut down your light!
"You're just a girl.
Go play with your dolls.
Go back to your house.
Go mop up the halls."
"Go clean your room.
Go do the laundry.
You can't be with us.
You're just too scrawny."
I can be like you,
I can hold up the sun.
Without the women,
men would be done!
I have the courage.
I have the power.
I have the might.
You'll not tell me "NO" without a fight.
Farrah's poem is a finalist in the Belmont University poetry contest and was recorded last Saturday at Belmont. You can go to the following link to read the poems and hear the songs. http://www.belmont.edu/sl/poetrycontests/Middle%20School%20Contest.html
