Message from the Principal
Dear Central Road Families,
Please welcome our newest staff member, Chelsea Gnan, to Central Road! Ms. Gnan is our new part-time special education resource teacher. Ms. Gnan is an enthusiastic teacher who is resourceful, determined and committed to doing whatever is necessary to support the students on her caseload. Chelsea will begin in her new position on Monday, January 27th.
Family Reading Night is on Thursday, February 6th from 6:00-7:30 p.m.. Flyers were sent home last week, and are attached to this email. Please RSVP for the event! We will have several guest readers from our community that will be reading books aloud to students. Guest readers include; Dr. Laurie Heinz, Superintendent; Dr. Claire Kowalczyk, Deputy Superintendent; Joe Gallo, Mayor of Rolling Meadows; Terry Valentino, Rolling Meadows Fire Chief; Ms. Kathy, Central Road’s Crossing Guard and Officer Mike Courtney, School Resource Office from the Rolling Meadows Police Department. In addition to the guest readers, Ms. Darlene from the Rolling Meadows Library will be engaging the students in a literacy activity. In addition to the literacy activities for students, our staff will be providing parents with information about the new FPC reading resource. We hope you can join us!
Central Road will be hosting International Night every two years. The event is a wonderful way to bring our community together. We will hold the event in the spring of 2021.
Our Student Leadership team is sponsoring a Warm Winter Wear Drive. If you have gently used coats, gloves, hats or scarves. Please send them to school with your child. We will collect and redistribute the items to students who need items for the winter weather.
Please be sure to have your child wear snow pants and boots to school, so they can enjoy playing in the snow during recess.
Students and staff did an incredible job during our Talent Show! The students were so courageous performing their acts in front of a huge audience. I appreciate all of the time and effort students put into their acts. Every single act was inspirational! I was so proud of each student. The staff did a great job too! A special thank you to Mrs. Holmes, Ms. Fairbanks and Mrs. Laabs for choreographing the staff dance.
Warmest Regards,
Patti Van Winkle
Principal
PBIS
Teaching students expectations for their behavior and providing ways for students to learn useful tools and strategies for their daily lives at school, at home and in the community -- now and as they grow to adulthood -- is an important component of D15’s curriculum.
From our youngest to our oldest students, D15 uses a framework -- called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) -- to teach and acknowledge expected behaviors and create support systems to encourage positive behavior so that students can be successful.
Kindergartners, for example, may gather in a circle to learn and understand each other's special talents and gifts as a way to create a peaceful learning community of students. By eighth grade, our oldest students use "I messages" to express and communicate their emotions and thoughts in an effort to #vibe with their classmates.
Across D15, each school uses PBIS to establish clear expectations for positive behaviors. At every school, a leadership team creates a social culture for students -- like the "Wildcat Way" at Frank C. Whiteley, "Leading Like Lions" at Lake Louise and "We are Warriors" at Winston Campus Junior High -- to help students know and remember the positive behaviors. These expectations are specifically taught, modeled and reinforced across all settings by all school personnel.
Here at Central Road, we use " The Wolf Way of Being Respectful, Responsible and Safe"
As the school year unfolds, schools monitor and use data about current student behaviors to select areas that may need special attention. And just as we do in academic instruction, all D15 schools use a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) model for PBIS to meet the needs of every child. A school-wide program in the first tier offers a universal lesson for all students. Those needing an extra layer of support to learn these skills will receive tier 2 instruction, and some will need more intensive, individualized instruction in tier 3.
PBIS is a powerful component of D15’s efforts to create a connected learning community so vital to helping each student become a world-class learner, while also improving school safety and promoting positive behavior. To learn more about PBIS at your child’s grade level, please view our website here.
5 Essentials
How are we doing? Take the 5Essentials survey to share your feedback.
This is your opportunity to evaluate your school according to five areas, including but not limited to instructional climate, homework policies and quality of facilities. Fill out your online survey through Feb. 14, 2020.
The results from this survey will become part of each school's public Illinois School Report Card. The data is also used periodically by media outlets as part of national and state school rankings.
We thank you for your feedback!
Valentine's Day Parties
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and we are already working with our school PTAs to prepare for classroom parties.
As you may recall, District 15 revised its allergy policy to offer a greater level of safety and inclusion for students with severe food allergies and no longer allows food to be served in school outside of meal and snack times. Although this is new to District 15, it is a common policy that has already been implemented in many districts across our area.
During Valentine’s Day parties, our students will still have a great time playing games, making crafts and enjoying time outside of the regular classroom routine. Our Halloween parties were successful without food, and we are confident we’ll have the same result for Valentine’s Day!
Please remember that our food-free policy extends to Valentine’s Day cards. If you plan to purchase these for your child’s classmates, please ensure they do not contain candy or other edible items.
If you are volunteering in your child’s classroom and need ideas for food-free fun, we have created a list of ideas to share with you. Please connect with me if you’d like to discuss this further.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Queridos padres,
Census 2020
Every 10 years, the United States counts the people in this country. This process is called the Census. Everyone counts – babies, children, teens, adults and older adults.
Illinois receives $20 billion in federal funding through U.S. Census data. This funding is important as it supports vital programs such as public schools, Medicaid and programs that help low-income households. If Illinoisans are not counted during the upcoming 2020 Census, fewer resources will come to the state, having a direct impact on us here in District 15.
District 15 will be working with other community organizations to support a complete count in our area. District 15 will be sharing more information on how to participate in the coming weeks.
Online Registration is Open
Online registration is now open for all students attending District 15 schools in the 2020-21 school year!
We opened registration earlier this year to allow families more time to complete the process. Please visit www.ccsd15.net/registration for information and instructions on how to register your child. If you are having trouble completing the process, please contact your child’s school office for assistance.
