Give Me 20 Presentations Are Coming!
On Monday, May 22nd our 8th graders will be participating in a send-off activity focused on mental health and suicide prevention. The Give Me 20 program was started by two local moms who lost their teen children to suicide and now they are working to make a difference in how we view and talk about mental health. The 8th graders will hear directly from the moms and then create life boxes to keep with them during hard times as they move on to high school and beyond. We’re looking forward to an impactful activity for our students as we wish them well in their futures.
To opt your student out of this activity, please email nicolenelson@smsd.org

9th Grade Vaccination Requirements + Nursing Notes
Attention 8th Grade Parents:
Hepatitis A (Hep A):
- Two doses are required for all students entering 9th grade.
- Doses must be at least 6 months apart.
Not sure if you have turned in your child’s vaccination records to the nurse? You can check Skyward.
- Accessing student health information:
- In Skyward Family Access, on the left-hand side, scroll down to “health info” and click on the link.
- Across the top, you will see a blue underlined link that says “display options.”
- Show Vaccinations – this will display your child’s immunizations on file with the school.
- If you don’t see a dose listed, your nurse does not have the record. Please provide that to the school nurse.
Please contact the nurse with any questions.
Allergies
This season has been brutal and the nurse’s office supply of allergy meds is running very low. If your student suffers from seasonal allergies, please have them take medicine before arriving at school.
Drinks
Just a reminder - it is an expectation that students do NOT drink caffeinated drinks such as coffee and other energy drinks while at Indian Hills. Energy drinks especially are hard on developing middle school minds and bodies. If we see them, they will be dumped.
Please help your student get a good night sleep, a balanced breakfast, and lots of water! Water is the only drink to be consumed while at school.
Speaking of - have your student check the lost and found if they are missing their water bottle 🙂
Injuries
If your student has had an injury that will interfere with their daily schedule, please notify the Nurse’s Office. Get documentation at each appointment as it is required by the Shawnee Mission School District. It is much easier to ask for documentation from your doctor while you are at an appointment than hunt someone down later. Thank you 🙂

SME Weight Room Upgrade Donations
Help upgrade the Shawnee Mission East weight room! With over 400 student-athletes utilizing the facility each week and 700 over the summer, we need to convert underutilized space, upgrade outdated equipment, and purchase new units urgently. The plan necessary to accomplish this, given the growing need, is a minimum of $150,000 which we can’t do without your support!
We invite you to visit the current weight room (as we envision our state-of-the-art weight room) facility for a tour. Join our Strength and Conditioning and new Head Football Coach, Mark Simoneau, as he showcases the facility's much-needed features and highlights the resources required to enhance our boys’ and girls’ athletic programs.
