Queer Week 2018!

It's that time of year again! Join Haven in celebrating and focusing on the LGBTQ+ community for a whole week of exciting events. We're looking forward to sharing these events with you!

All of our Queer Week events are completely FREE for attendees (and some even have free food!!), but we encourage anyone with the financial resources to donate a few dollars to our fundraiser for the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. The SRLP provides legal resources to queer individuals to work to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income level or race, without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. All donations should be made through Venmo to the Haven Venmo account (@Haven-CornellLGBTQ).

All of us at Haven are proud to bring this week to you and we hope you'll be able to check out a few of the events during this busy time of year.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Documentary Screening and Discussion” on April 20th

As you might know, the bold, anti-apartheid feminist icon, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has recently passed away. Although her ex-husband, Nelson Mandela is far more popular, it is less well-known that Winnie did the work of political mobilization and action for the 27 years Mandela was incarcerated by the apartheid government. She arguably kept his name relevant, and was the focal point of anti-apartheid resistance in South Africa for much of the struggle.

To commemorate her passing, the Africana Department is hosting a documentary screening and discussion on Friday April 20th starting at 3:00pm.

The department has asked me to reach out to student organizations to see how they want to participate/contribute to this event.

Action Item: 1. Would your organization like to be involved in this? 2. How (e.g give opinion/ share memory of Winnie/ etc)? 3. Can you please spread the word? Please reply to this email and let me know as soon as possible!

Thank you again, and I look forward to hearing back!

Spa Day for the Planet

Cornell Minds Matter, Cornell Students for Animal Rights, and various other cultural clubs are coming together to create “Spa Day for the Planet”. This event will focus on mental health, sustainable eating, and cultural awareness. We will have a ton of great activities like massages, manicures, henna, succulent plants and more. On top of that there will be plant based, cultural food! The event will be held in Willard Straight Hall on Friday, April 27th from 8pm to 10pm.

This is where you come in! We are reaching out to clubs to collaborate with and share their cultures with a plant-based dish. As you’ve likely heard, vegan food is the best for the environment when compared to meat, eggs, and dairy. We are asking for your club to make a plant based dish that represents your culture. You can make a dish that is already plant-based, or make a plant based version of a dish. Gluten free, soy free, nut free and/or kosher dishes are a plus as they make will make our event more accessible. We would also be grateful for any help advertising such as putting up a few posters or sharing the Facebook page.

Please feel free to bring promotional materials or other things you want to display about your culture. We will be also be doing a gallery with information about various food and cultures and would love expertise from other cultural orgs on what to display. We will also reimburse you for the cost of the ingredients. Thank you so much for reading this and if you and your club are interested, please email Please feel free to forward this email to other cultural orgs.
