Heritage Primary Eblast
January 2020
PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Heritage Families,
Hello! Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a fantastic break!
Each new year I suggest starting it off with setting goals. A few weeks ago I came across a new app called Strides. My kids and I worked together to come up with a few goals we can set each week. For example, my son has three things he works on each week. He has to read independently for 125 minutes, practice soccer skills four nights a week and eat all his vegetables three times a week. We used the Strides app to help him schedule it all out. It’s pretty cool to kids because it’s an app and it is something they control. It also reminds them about their daily goals with alarms. Check it out: https://www.stridesapp.com/. My goals are to read six nights a week, exercise thirty minutes a day and to spend quality time with a loved one each week. Together we worked very hard on making attainable goals. Hopefully this app will help us stay motivated. It takes 22 consecutive days to build a new habit!
Let’s all do the best we can to make the second semester a great one where we all work towards bettering ourselves in all aspects of our lives.
Have a great New Year!

Heritage Family-Looking Out for One Another
When introducing someone to our school for the first time, many will make the comment- “Wow, this school is HUGE!”. The size of our school can seem large at times, but within the walls of Heritage, we are a close knit family. As we begin the new year, I want to strive to continue to improve the Heritage culture and sense of family. Last year we began by inviting families to events that were traditionally student-only celebrations. It was wonderful to see our families finally able to attend our Walk-a-thon and Paws Pass Parade. We are hoping to continue these traditions and watch the attendance at these events grow. We love seeing our families at school and watching them connect as parents, neighbors and community members. Coming together helps to build a sense of community inside and outside of our school building.
For the new year, I encourage you to look out for one another in your neighborhood communities as well. The kids you see at the bus stop, on your sidewalks and in your backyard are part of our Heritage family. Please make sure you are watching out for them as you would your own. If you see a child who looks lost, hurt or sad-please check on them to see if they are in need. It takes a village as they say, and that child most likely is a friend or classmate of your own child. Let’s continue to connect with one another to help all of our Heritage children grow, be safe and enjoy being a part of our Heritage Primary family!

Some Facts About Head Lice
Where children are present and playing, there is always the possibility of the presence of head lice (pediculus humanus capitis), which means there is a potential for lice at school.
The WSD has aligned nurse practices with both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses and we ask that parents keep the following information in mind:
- Lice are not a disease.
- Lice do not reflect unsanitary homes or students.
- Lice are absolutely an inconvenience
- By detecting lice early, both parents and nurses can get ahead in the process.
- Children with lice will not be excluded from school.
If you have a concern that lice are present in your child's school or if your child may have come in contact with another person with lice, check him/her frequently and let your school nurse know about the exposure in an effort to catch it before it gets out of hand.
KEEPING OUR CHILDREN SAFE
We are asking for your help as you drive your child to school. We want ALL of our children to arrive to school and home safely.
*Drive Smart
*Slow down and be alert in our Heritage neighborhood and school zones.
*Take extra time to look for kids at intersections and on curbs.
*Enter and exit driveways, roadways and intersections slowly and carefully.
*Watch for children on or near roads in the morning and after schools hours.
*Reduce distractions inside your car to concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
*Stop behind the white line at crosswalks.
* Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign.
For Those Walking/Biking to School
*Make sure your child has a safe route before allowing him or her to walk to
school.
*Make sure sidewalks are clear of snow, if riding a bike.
*Ride your bike on the sidewalk, not in the street.
*Always cross at a crosswalk.
*Walk, don’t run, across the street.
*Make sure drivers see you before crossing in front of them.
If your child is a walker, please drop off on either side of NORTHVIEW so they can safely cross at the crosswalk with the adults present. Please drop your child off at least five car lengths back from the intersection. Thank you for helping us keep our Heritage Cubs & Bears safe.
Changes to our Box Tops for Education program!
This year we are changing our school reward program for collecting Box Tops due to the program being in the process of going digital. The school has set a goal to raise $1000 for technology in our school. We will be tracking this goal and when we reach a percentage goal, we will have a schoolwide celebration. We are excited to show all students how much the Box Top program impacts our school and how easy it is becoming to participate by just scanning your receipt instead of clipping and submitting on paper.
Eventually the Box Tops program will become digital-only. Participating brands are starting to change their packaging from a traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label.
If you see this label, use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth 10¢ for our school. The app will find participating products purchased at any store and instantly add cash to your school's earnings online.
Look for a flyer to come home explaining in more detail the changes Box Tops has made to their program. As always we appreciate your participation to earn us money for our school's technology.

Volunteer Background Check
An annual background check is required for all volunteers. That includes child abuse and neglect screenings, as well as a check of the national sex offender registry. Anyone who has a substantiated incident of child abuse or is on the sex offender list will not be allowed to volunteer in our schools. When completed and signed, please return these forms to the school office to be processed. These services are offered free of charge, but do take some time, so please allow at least one week for school personnel to process the request. Anyone who wishes to participate in classroom activities like school parties, or class field trips, will need to have a completed background check. We encourage all parents to fill out the request so we will have one on file for the year.
Important Information to Know
Since teachers are engaged with students in the classroom during school hours, the best way to contact them is through email, voicemail, or a note. This will give them the opportunity to contact you during their planning time. Our teachers are also happy to arrange an appointment to discuss your child’s progress.
If you have an urgent matter, call the main office at 636-327-3846 and an office secretary will be happy to help you in any way they can.
End of the Day Procedures
Please call the main office before 2:00 pm with any transportation changes. We appreciate as much time as possible to relay the message to your student and their teacher.
If you are going to pick up your student early from school, please come before 3:00 pm. We call students to the office upon your arrival as we want students engaged in class as long as possible. Remember that early pick ups and/or late arrivals impact perfect attendance. Please note there is no early dismissal from the Primary Office between 3:00 pm and 3:20 pm. If you must pick up your student early from school, please do so prior to 3:00 pm.
