The Great Migration

Define
Relocation of over 6 million African Americans from the rural south to the cities of the North, Midwest, and west from 1916-1970.
Cause
Some reasons why the migration happened was because there was not a lot of economical opportunities In the south, but there was in the north so people moved there for jobs. Another reason for the migration was because of Jim Crow laws which were laws against blacks.
Characteristics
- Between 1910 and 1920 the percentage of African Americans living in the south began to fall
- Between 1910 and 1920 the population of African Americans living in the North and West grew by 333,000
- By 1930 more than 21.2% of African Americans were living outside of the south
Significance
Because of "The Great Migration" many smaller cities or communities were made such as Harlem in New York that still exist today.
