Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
November 8th, 2019
From the Assistant Director
I first want to take a moment to shout out to a few students who emulated the values we uphold as a community with no desire for a reward or recognition. Senior Hannah Kwon displayed a great deal of character the other day when she cleaned up a mess in the Phoenix Cafe that was left by other students. It is easier to simply leave this mess for the cleaning staff. Hannah's actions indicate that she has a commitment and care for our shared spaces and community. I also want to recognize Freshman Minseong Park whose positive attitude and leadership skills are on display daily. It is a great lift to see this young grade representative doing his best to make this school a better place for all those who walk through the doors. Thank you to Hannah and Minseong for your outstanding display of character and community awareness!
This busy week concluded with an explosion of school spirit at our first Pep Rally put on by Senior Grace Cho! We welcomed the American Drama Group Europe who performed Romeo and Juliet for the High and Middle school students. This group flew out here at their own expense and performed this show for free, we are incredibly grateful! Our librarians, Ms. Choo and Ms. Carley, were incredibly pleased with how many students dropped by and purchased books at yet another successful book fair on Thursday and Friday. Teams were also finalized for both Varsity Basketball teams and our Cheerleading teams this week as they start their season's next week!
The school has become increasingly worried about sleep deprivation over the past few years. Due to this concern the school has made a number of changes we hope reduces the need for students to stay up late. Over the summer, we made alterations to our schedule in order to provide more structured time during our school day for students to complete their work. This week we have required all teachers to set online deadlines (google classroom) to 10:30pm instead of midnight. We encourage all students to prioritize sleep. We also hope that our parents can help our efforts by reinforcing the importance of sleep and developing time management skills which will enable them to get the appropriate amount of sleep.
The CDS community wishes you all a great weekend and look forward to yet another successful week when we return on Monday!
All the best,
Mr. Jason Musselman

Grade 10 Physical Education - Down, Set, Hut!
"In term 2, students in Grade 10 Physical & Health Education have been learning the game of American Football. Due to American Football being a contact sport, we play the adapted version called Flag Football which doesn't involve tackling your opponent. Surprisingly enough, most students in the class have never played the sport before or even thrown a football before. In this unit, students have learned how to grip, throw and catch a football, how to punt a ball, how to do handoffs, lateral passes, man-2-man defense and they even learned some basic passing routes, such as In, Out, Flag, Post, Bomb & Hook. I can tell that most of the students have really taken a liking to the sport and seem to be enjoying themselves." - Mr. Shawn Monette
CDS Boxing Club
"Boxing club is in its 3rd year and is going strong! We have 17 members this year and a new coach! His name is Dohoon Kim and he is a professional boxer, located in Incheon. He comes to teach us on Wednesdays during SOT2 time. He also stays after school for an optional 30 minute workout for those who want a longer session. I interviewed some club members so readers could see what boxing club is really like!" - Ms.Rebecca Laders
Ms. Laders: Hi guys, thanks for joining me. So, why did you join boxing club?
Hyunjin Lim: I joined boxing club because I wanted to do something physically active and I heard a lot of my friends were doing it, so I joined too.
Ricky Kim: I joined because Ms. Laders has been trying to get me to box since I was in 7th grade. Since it is my final year at CDS, I decided to give in and try it out. I really love the sport and feel that it is helping me be less of a wimp. I also love doing boxing because I get to be with my friends, especially Hyunjin.
Brian Kim: I wanted to join boxing club because I thought it would help me lose weight, and my friends were also doing it, so I followed them and decided to join. Also Ms. Laders kind of threatened me so…
Ms. Laders: That last part that is untrue and should be stricken from the record. So, what is your favorite part of boxing club?
Hyunjin Lim: Learning new moves. My favorite punch is the classic 1, 2 combination.
Ricky Kim: Trying to get out of the workout by negotiating with Coach Kim. It doesn’t work most of the time, but I like trying. It’s like my boxing idol, Muhammad Ali, always said: “Ouch! Not in the face please!” That quote really resonates with me.
Brian Kim: For me, I love working out in general because it releases adrenaline and I feel really energetic. I also love watching Ricky struggle.
Ms. Laders: That’s also my favorite part. Man, that kid is a wimp. [Everyone, including Ricky, nods in agreement]. Last question: Who is the best boxer in our club?
Hyunjin Lim: Me, obviously. Second best is Coach Kim.
Ricky Kim: No, Hyunjin is wrong, it is definitely me. *punches the air to show off his moves*
Brian Kim: You’re all delusional, it is definitely Bart. That kid could run circles around us and does the fastest burpee I’ve ever seen.
Ms. Laders: That is so true. Well, thanks for the interview, gentlemen!
Students who want to join boxing club can do so in T3, so sign up if you want to release some stress, learn a new sport, and hang out with your friends!

Photosynthesis and Osmosis
"This week 9th grade Biology students learned how to indirectly measure the rate of photosynthesis using the floating leaf disk method on spinach leaves to measure oxygen production. Students then considered a number of variables that might affect the rate of photosynthesis and the floating leaf disk method itself. From their observations and the questions they raised, the students designed and conducted their own experiment to test one or more of the variables that might affect the rate of photosynthesis. From their investigation, they analyzed and interpreted their results and presented their findings in a formal lab report.
In AP Biology, to demonstrate principles of diffusion and osmosis, students carried out several experiments and investigations over the course of the week. In one procedure, students used artificial cells to study the relationship between surface area and volume. In another experiment, students created models of living cells using dialysis tubing to explore questions about diffusion and osmosis. Finally, in the final investigation students were given several color-coded solutions with unknown concentrations of sucrose. Students designed an experiment to identify the concentrations of these sucrose solutions and then used the solutions to determine the water potential of potato cells.
Through these labs, students were able to answer many questions about topics related to photosynthesis or diffusion and osmosis. However, as is the case with science, while some questions may be answered, there are always new ones being generated when undergoing the process of scientific investigation." - Mr. Chris Martin
CDS Rock Climbing
The HPE department proudly held its first ever out of school expedition taking 12 students, mainly 9th and 12th graders, rock climbing at a nearby facility. Leading the way was senior Brian Kim who approached Mr. Parmar in urgency to continue a push for assembling such an event as word had leaked that rock climbing was going to happen but plans fell through. Nonetheless, with the event garnering much interest, students were reluctant to let such an opportunity of a lifetime slip through their hands. As a result, rock climbing happened and it took place on Wednesday October 30, 2019.
All 12 students were highly engaged and participated to the best of their ability. The most impressive part about the trip was their maturity and well-mannered behaviour as they built a great deal of community by being highly respectful of the facility, staff and management, and equipment. Meeting in the lobby to kickstart the adventure, the 12 hopped on a mini bus as they munched on some burgers and fries from Mom's Touch. Arriving at the center in about 25 minutes, they registered and checked in. After receiving the appropriate gear, harness and shoes, they watched a safety protocol video regarding how to use the ropes properly. Then they took off upward bound to the top of the walls to hit the button as a signal of accomplishment only to retract back to the ground to conquer another wall. Spending around 1 hour at the rope climbing walls allowed the students to get a good grasp of how to rock climb.
During the 2nd hour, the crew headed downstairs to the bouldering area; gigantic rocks that are climbable with various grooves pierced scarcely creating an intricate and challenging pathway from the bottom to the top! As a result, students exhibited a great deal of curiousity finding the best route for success. Many students were very successful on conquering some boulders while other boulders proved to be quite challenging. The collaboration was evident as the 12 students enthusiastically communicated and encouraged one another to keep trying. At the end of the day, students were extremely thrilled and grateful that such an event took place. Many are asking for more and an encore for rock climbing!

NHS October Student of the Month Kevin Cho in Grade 12
"Kevin Cho has been excelling this school year and demonstrated great character both in and outside of the classroom. Being his house teacher this year has been an absolute delight this as he has shown an ability to bring together students with his humorous personality while also providing a great atmosphere for all parties. During We Run Cheongna Kevin delighted everyone by bringing his dog for all to enjoy and reduce stress for the community event. Acts like this show the true character of Kevin and his impact on the community." - Mr. Mark Adams
National Honor Society (aka NHS): How do you feel about being selected as the student of the month?
Kevin: To start with, I feel extremely proud of myself. Starting in 7th grade, I wasn't a super nice, and a kind person generally. As years have passed, I have realized how to treat people and how to lead a crowd.
NHS: Teachers voted that you exhibit “character” the most out of the 6Cs. In what ways do you think you have demonstrate character throughout the past month?
Kevin: I think I've shown 'character' in a way that not many students currently would. Leading the house. In Mr.Adam's house, I felt that there needed to be a leader because all students were very shy. No progress was happening. So I stood up, and started to lead House.
NHS: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Kevin: I see myself working in a company, where I could fully express my thoughts and emotions, so I would not have to restrain myself from being free.

Adieu CDS Volleyball 2019-2020
Girls Volleyball Updates
Over the weekend, the CDS Girls Volleyball team took part in the cup tournament for the second straight year. As the only representative from the lowest division, the girls were facing some really tough competition, the likes of which they had never seen before. Their first game was against a strong team from HHS.
The second game was against TCIS. The girls were using a new rotation, and doing their best to find success without their star setter. Each set got better and better, as the team started to feel more comfortable with the new lineup. Unfortunately the results were the same, as TCIS won in 3 sets. Without any rest, the girls stepped into their final game against Chadwick. They struggled to get any momentum going in the previous two games, but against Chadwick, the girls were a much different team. They controlled the majority of the first set, but a long run for their opponents was the difference maker. The second set saw much of the same, as Jueun Lee and Polina Zaitseva found a connection that was difficult to stop. But in the end, our girls lost another close set.. In what could have been their last set of the year, the girls worked together to play the scrappiest volleyball of the season. Winning that set looked like it could have been a turning point in the game, but the girls ultimately ended up losing the fourth and final set, finishing off the tournament in 8th place.
Special recognition goes to Ashley Shimada, Jueun Lee and Polina Zaitseva for winning the player of the game honors. Also to Jueun Lee, Rachel Kim and Jean Shin for receiving the all-conference selections and Polina Zaitseva for receiving the all-tournament selection. Even though it was an amazing season that will go down in the record books for the CDS girls volleyball program, the girls will look to build on that success next year.
