EP32: Google Keep for the Win!
In this episode, Jonathan and Mindy are on their best behavior because they are joined by (their boss) Stacy Behmer (@sbehmer) to talk about Google Keep and all the ways in which it can be used to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom. New podcasts for kids are shared and so are the usual helping of tech nuggets. Here are some links to all that they talked about.Listen online at dlgwaea.org, or in your favorite podcast app, and if you enjoy listening, please share this podcast with others or leave a review on iTunes. Think, Make, Innovate: Nursery Rhyme Maker Style
In this episode, we feature our youngest makers - pre-schoolers! As part of a parents' night at All Saints Elementary, students, parents, brothers, and sisters were all part of the maker magic tying back into the nursery rhyme of Humpty Dumpty. This month's challenge is an egg challenge. How can you help Humpty Dumpty survive his big fall? Can you create something to help Humpty Dumpty travel and stabilize?
There are so many different interpretations of this challenge, we can't wait to see what you make! Join our Maker Community by sending us your photos or videos through social media and tag @dlgwaea or send an email to makerspace@gwaea.org and we will post them on our website, www.dlgwaea.org.
A big thanks to Sherri Miller at All Saints Elementary for letting us be a part of their maker night!
New to making?
Feel free to reference our lesson plan for tips on implementation, extension ideas.
Maker Community
Our goal is to create a community of makers. We hope you will consider sharing student work to post to our Community Inspiration Board. Feel free to explore any of the challenges from season one and share back your results! Sharing is easy - send us your photos or videos through social media and tag @dlgwaea or send an email to makerspace@gwaea.org.

Meetups on Computer Science Education
NewBoCo is taking the opportunity to host four open meetups on computer science education in Iowa following our workshops for teachers this academic year, and we would like to gather as many stakeholders as we can to build a strong CS Ed community for teachers and decision makers. We will have some organized activities, such as the Iowa CSTA chapter meetings, but the goal of these events is to bring Iowans together around this topic and discuss what is already happening and where we need to go. More information can be found on the Eventbrite pages, and we would appreciate it if you would share these opportunities with others in your network.
If you have questions contact Samantha Dahlby, K-12 Education Coordinator, NewBoCo
Our BrightBytes Data and Feedback!
Feedback is an essential part of growing, learning and improving! There are many ways teachers and students can use digital tools to get feedback! One great tool the GWAEA Digital Learning Team has been talking a lot about is FlipGrid to provide feedback.
Here is a recent blog post, Calling All Compliments, about using FlipGrid to provide positive feedback to others. There was also an EdTech Takeout episode entitled #FlipGrid Fever, all about some innovative uses of this tool!
Flipgrid can also support many of our BrightBytes data points around the 4Cs!
Data Point: Teachers ask students to receive feedback from others in the classroom
Why This Matters
Students in one study agreed that the “diversity and creativity” offered by working in peer groups far outweighed that which is attainable when working alone (Chao & Lo, 2011).
Teachers ask students to use chat or video chat applications
Why This Matters
Students can now compose messages without knowing sound-symbol relationships; rather, they can speak and have their message recorded and then sent as a message, allowing them to participate in social media and communicate with others at even younger ages (Barone, 2012).
Teachers ask students to use web tools to receive online information
Why This Matters
“To take advantage of online educational opportunities, people need to have a good understanding of how knowledge is constructed and how it represents reality and articulates a point of view” (Hobbs, 2010).
Please contact your digital learning consultant if you are interested in getting their Brightbytes- Clarity data.
