Family Fun! October, 2015
Our Mission: Arbor Springs Committed to Student Success
From Dr. D. and Dr. T.
Students are quickly learning how to use the new ChromeBooks. Even our kindergarten students have had loads of fun doing collaborative projects and using them for on-the-spot assessments! They have become so popular that we have had to limit the amount of time each teacher can check them out--but we hope to purchase more in the very near future. For more information about our Google Apps for Education, please visit our Arbor Springs website at www.cowetaschools.org/arbor and click on the link about Google Apps for Education.
Three very exciting things happened in October: Governor Deal's education outreach representative, Pam Williams, visited Arbor Springs recently and was so impressed with our students and our teachers. Our Read for the Record day brought in some future teachers to read Not Norman to our students. In addition, Dr. Lisa Quick and Mrs. Keivia Clay were awarded a Bright from the Start grant! We are so proud!
If you are missing jackets or sweaters, they may be in our overflowing lost and found bin in the front office. Please ask your child to check, or you are welcome to stop in and look for yourself. We will be donating these items to Goodwill in November.
Please let us know if we can help with anything, at any time. We can be reached at 770-463-5903.

Nurse's Notes
Nurses Notes:
Colder weather is fast approaching!! Along with this time of year comes the dreaded flu!! Please consider getting the flu vaccine for your children. You can check with your pediatrician.
We do have new guidelines from Children’s Health Care of Atlanta. CHOA has set the “send home” temperature at 99.6. So please be understanding when asked to pick up your student.
Attention Pre-k and Kindergarten parents: when you registered your child for school you signed a waiver form for your Immunizations and Hearing/Dental/Vision. The deadline is fast approaching to get those turned in. Most waivers expire November 7, 2015. Many students still need to complete the Hearing/Dental/Vision Form 3300.
Also, please remember to dress your child warmly. Place names in your child’s coats, hats, gloves. We have so many coats left at school. Many are left unclaimed. If they are labeled we can help return them. We do have lost and found if ever you want to stop by and look for your child’s lost items.
And last but not least….please stress the importance of hand washing!! Nothing can help your child stay well during cold and flu season than clean hands.
Have a great November and a Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
Sincerely, Rebecca Sims RN, School Nurse

Swimming in a School of Character:
This month character word is loyalty! Loyalty means feelings of faithfulness or allegiance to a friend or obligation. Also, it means an attitude of attachment that results in actions beneficial towards another or others.
Tips to Help Teach Loyalty
As with all positive character traits, you have to exercise them to teach them. Show loyalty to teach loyalty.
Develop a sense of community within your home and family for your children. As they feel like they're part of a family community, they'll take ownership of and develop loyalty to the unit.
Children need to learn how to address and work through conflicts. Use conflict resolution to address conflicts. This will teach your children that just because a conflict arises, the relationship between the two parties doesn't need to end.
One of the most important things you can do to teach loyalty is to do activities together as a family. This offers them the opportunity to be involved in each other's lives and shows support for one another. (Yes! Safe Choice for Kids, 2015)
Bullying Prevention Month
October was National Bullying Prevention Month. National Bullying Prevention Month is a campaign in the United States founded in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. The campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. The goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages. Fourth and fifth grade students learned about the effects of peer pressure and ways to stand up to peer pressure! This month students will continue to learn about bullying prevention.
Red Ribbon Week
The last week of October students and faculty at Arbor Springs showed our commitment to a drug-free lifestyle by participating in various Red Ribbon activities all week long. Our theme this year was Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free! It is important to devote time to teaching the effects of drugs, making the right choices, and choosing to live a healthy lifestyle!
Arbor Springs’ Career Day:
Career Day was a HUGE success! Thank you to all the volunteers and community stakeholders that presented their career and/or vehicles to the students and staff of Arbor Springs Elementary! This day would not have been possible without your support! Thank you for taking the time to impact the lives of our students!

Can-A-Thon
November 4-18
Beginning Wednesday, November 4 our school will collect cans for Can-A-Thon. Below are some tips to follow when donating.
The Salvation Army has a few tips to make sure your donations meet the growing needs of those in need:
DO donate pop-tops cans. They're easier for individuals who do not have stable housing equipped with kitchen utensils
DO give canned meats. Canned ham, tuna, and beef are the staple of a hearty meal, but aren't donated as often as they're needed.
DON'T donate anything in glass. Baby food and pasta sauce are needed donations, but make sure to look for the plastic or canned containers.
DO donate canned fruit. The Salvation Army says they're often short on fruit. They're used as deserts after a meal and are favorites for kids.
DO include green vegetables. They're in high demand for pregnant mothers and children.
DO buy low sodium or no sodium canned vegetables. Home-bound elderly clients are among those most in need, and are often on special diets.
DON'T donate anything that's perishable. Can-a-thon donations will help meet family needs through the holidays, but they'll also fill the Salvation Army shelves for months to come.

We had a beautiful day for Gator Run - thank you to all the volunteers and supporters to came out to cheer the kids on! We will have financial results soon but it looks like one of the most successful Gator Runs in Arbor Springs history. PTA will provide so many enriching products and services for our school with these funds and we will not need another major fundraiser this year! We’re looking forward to Starlite Skate Night on Nov. 12 and Santa Night on Dec. 10. Also, PTA is hosting a Santa’s Secret Shop from Dec. 7-11 where students can buy inexpensive holiday gifts for friends and family. More details to come! Don’t forget to “Like” the Arbor Springs PTA Facebook page to get updates on PTA and school functions.
Please keep sending in Box Tops, Labels for Education and Sunny D UPCs! The new Box Tops “Thanks for Giving” Contest is in full swing!! The top class from each grade level wins a Santa Buck ($1 coupon to Santa’s Secret Shop)!
