Daylight Savings Time (DST) 2021
Hi Northwood! Please note, this Sunday, March 14 at 2 AM we “spring ahead," which means you will need to set your clocks forward one hour before you fall asleep on Saturday, March 13 (most apple/android products adjust automatically). Below are 2 helpful suggestions to help your family adjust to the time change.
1. Tire yourself out. The weather predicted for the days before DST is perfect for hitting the playground, and some activity helps to advance our body clocks. Even if the weather isn’t the greatest, get outside and play!
2. Get out of bed. No matter how tempted you are, don’t sleep in. If you snooze, so will your kids and you’ll all pay the price later when everyone is awake at midnight. So bite the bullet and go make breakfast.
Lastly, don’t forget to take this opportunity to check the batteries in your smoke detectors.
School Picture pick-up
If you have not done so already please stop by the school for picture day pick up!
Make sure to check-in at the front desk for pick up Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Thank you!
**8th Grade Picture Update**
Pictures will be taking place in the school gym on Friday, March 19th from 10:15 am-12:00 pm during our asynchronous learning day. Please note, graduation gowns will be provided so you will not need to wear your uniform.
Read Across America
Read Alouds to enjoy the theme:
Game Changers, The Story of Venus & Serena Williams
Questions to ask your child while reading:
- By looking at the front cover, can you make a prediction about what the story will be about?
- Could you tell me, in your own words, what happened on this page?
- How do you think the character is feeling?
- Does this story remind you of anything in your own life?
- What was your favorite part of the story?
- What was your least favorite part of the story?

Kids in the Kitchen👨🏽🍳👩🏻🍳👨🏿🍳 FRUIT PALM 🌴 TREES
These are a great treat, especially when you are having Spring fever and would like to transport yourself to sunnier ☀️times! The bananas will fill those bellies while the oranges and kiwis add a little sweetness to the dish.
INGREDIENTS:

- 1 tangerine
PROCESS:
- Start by peeling your kiwis. Next, slice them into wedges to create your palm leaves.
- Peel and cut your bananas into slices for your trunk.
- Last, peel your tangerine and arrange the wedges into your beach. Ta da!

🧘🏿♀️Wellness Wednesday🧘🏽
Check-in physically: While children may not be moving from one classroom to the next, a virtual or at-home learning environment can still have many of the supports that a typical classroom or school has. Check-in with how children are feeling physically throughout the day and pay attention to sedentary patterns. Make sure they are balancing their day with physical activity and play.
- Break up the day with active brain breaks to recharge the body and brain. Get the wiggles out together with an online video or throw on some music and have a dance break.
- Schedule “recess” in your day-to-day routine. Use this time to break up the day.
- Make sure children are staying on a routine.

Tracking COVID-19 in Pennsylvania / Philadelphia
Unfortunately, we have moved back into the SUBSTANTIAL transmission level in Philadelphia County (Incidence Rate-102.68 and PCR-4.5%). This resets our calendar but does not prevent us from our anticipated opening date of April 19th. This date allows for post-Spring Break quarantine and teacher preparation time.
Again, once at a moderate level, we will track the data with the goal of remaining in LOW/MODERATE for three consecutive weeks. We will report this information via a REMIND on Tuesdays and also include the metrics in our Wednesday Bulldog Blast. Click on each of the charts below to go to the data tracking pages compiled by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia PolicyLab.Keep a lookout for a TOWN HALL Meeting in April to address any and all questions.
Lastly, please note ALL hybrid and virtual cohorts have been established. At this time we are not able to make any changes. Thank you for understanding. Additional questions or concerns? Info@northwoodcs.org
Free Meals Pickup 🍽️🥪🥣
We are continuing to give out frozen meals that last up to a month in the freezer, so extra meals can be stocked and saved for the weekends or a much later date! Pickup for multiple meals traditionally takes place at our cafeteria (Adams Ave. entrance) on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
We hope families continue to take advantage of this cost-saving and nutritional convenience.
