Maverick Minutes
Week of 3/5-3/9
Completing a 1/2 Marathon!
1. Be prepared. Be prepared for the unknown.
2. Have the right equipment.
3. Know your pace.
4. Stop...and take a moment when needed.
5. Shout at the madness when you need too...even if an expletive...you can get forgiveness later.
6. Rely on the positive.
7. Have a partner that will push you through.
8. Drink lots of water.
9. Release the water when it hits you.
10. Finish...No matter what place you come in!
I think we would dare say that we would do it differently if we had to do it again. At one point, the 5k was beginning and I said, "let's jump in that lane!" At that moment, a gentlemen looked at us and said, "You have trained way to hard to give it up for a 5K...to which I replied, "You have no idea!" However, the lesson learned that day are daily practices you can take with you each and every day you enter the classroom. Always plan for the unexpected, always know the lesson may not go the way you thought it would. Be prepared with all materials ready before you go. Know your pace and the amount of time you have to complete something. When you need a moment, take it, but get right back in the game. Had we stoped to sit, we were not getting back up. Unleash the frustration you have daily...but not always to your spouse. Sometimes, just go outside and holler, "Sh%$!" I promise it will make you feel better! Rely on the positive people in your lives. Too often we have to listen to the negative and it is draining. At mile 10, three women from Stanly County showed up to push us on. I don't know what I would've done without them. Also, kudos to Alesha! I could feel the blood building up on my feet and I would have called it at 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12...shoot, I think I would've stopped at 13 and not finish the .1. She was a beast!!! Always keep fluids going and release them. Hydration will get you through the day...water that is! Most of all. Finish. Finish what you start as strong as you can. I came in next to last in my age group. That's not good in case you are wondering. I will get better for the next one...because that's what you do with data. Look at it, assess it and get better the next go round with the other nine elements in place!
I am out tomorrow and Thursday at TOY interviews. (A perk of being POY). Wishing Kelly Morton the best of luck! See you all Tuesday!

A Day of Unity...A Partnership with HRHS!
Hello,
I just wanted to include our community schools in a campaign HRHS leadership students are in the process of developing. Below you will find a copy of the social media post that went out to the community. We would love to see all of our local schools join in our efforts to make our schools a safe and loving environment for all students. We have chosen a red, white, and blue theme and will be hopefully securing funding for all of our students to be able to wear a bracelet as a sign of unification. Nationally, on March 14th students are planning a walkout to protest school violence. Cabarrus county schools has asked us to come up with a plan to help encourage students to not leave the building. We are looking at a pretty serious safety concern. In an attempt to acknowledge students concerns we are planning a day of Unity at our school. We will be encouraging students to wear red white and blue and participate in random acts of kindness. Also, we are hoping to create a Unity chain with paper strips that will include “I Will Statements” from students and staff on how they will help to end school violence. Participation is on a voluntary basis only.
As our campaign unfolds I will be more than willing to share our ideas. I understand a campaign at an elementary and middle school may look very different. I do believe that UNITY is the only way we can start seeing a change.
