Growing Together:STOMP OUT Bullying
Mrs. Smith School Counselor
October is Anti-Bullying Month
Strategies covered:
- Say Stop: use an I-message
- Ignore: Don't give a reaction
- Steer Clear: avoid where the bully usually is
- Safety in Numbers: Stay with a group/ ask your friends for help
- Jump in & Help: Witnesses can ask the target to play with him/her
- Tell a Trusted Adult: if the bully does not stop, it is time to get help!
Students have also learned about the power of words. We have talked about how our words are awesome and have power- power to help or hurt. Each student chose a phrase or word of encouragement and kindness to use more often. Ask your student(s) what their word/phrase is.
In the coming week I will discuss the importance of cyber-safety with each 3rd through 6th grade class. For more resources about cyber-safety please follow the link to Growing Together, click the Parent/Guardian tab, scroll down to the "Bullying/Cyber-Bullying" box, and the click "Common Sense Media" button.
Monday & Tuesday - Oct. 12th-13th DRESS UP DAYS:
- Monday: "Dare to Be Different"- wear wacky socks
- Tuesday: "Stand Together Against Bullying"- Class can dress up together OR students can dress alike
I truly believe it takes a team of adults, working together, to help shape students into positive future citizens in our communities. Thank you for your partnership in helping all students achieve her/his level of academic, social/emotional, and future career success.
Flashback to College GO Week:
Outside of classroom lessons, students were invited to participate in a few fun college themed activities throughout the week. Each day students were encouraged to find a mascot or flag of the college/university highlighted that day- winning students were awarded a prize at the end of the day. Additionally, each school held post-secondary themed dress up days. The week concluded with a class door decorating contest, with Mrs. Blackwell's 5th grade class winning at Williamsport Elementary for their Purdue themed door and Mrs. Markey's 6th grade class winning for their creative display of each university she had attended. These classes won a cookie party- my kind of party if you ask me. :)
