Growing and learning with HSE21...

Two weeks ago in our GES SMORE, I shared a chart about the ins and outs of education. You have had some very good questions, observations and praises! Below is another chart that demonstrates the guiding instructional practices of Hamilton Southeastern Schools. We call this the HSE21 Model. We work to provide student centered approaches to your children where students have choice, differentiation and authentic learning. We want to provide an inquiry driven approach to learning where students can research and inquire as well as have input in their learning. Just this week, two classes have taken it upon themselves to make some important changes in our school. One group is providing resources to new students who come to our school and another group is improving the recess procedures around the game called GAGA. I wish you could be a fly on the wall and see their excitement to present, share facts and explain the plan! Students are listening to each other, presenting their viewpoints, justifying the need, making a plan and making a difference by their actions. Research shows that student choice in learning is important and improves engagement which in turn allows for further gains in their learning! WIN WIN!

Just recently my child was able to investigate a topic of her choosing. I have learned a great deal about "Salt." Yes, you read that correctly- SALT! She picked salt! Use of salts, location of salt, benefits and concerns of salt, and forms of salt! WHO KNEW there was so much to learn about salt. We learned there is salt you can eat and salt you cannot eat! In the process my child did research, cited research, summarized main ideas, and performed listening and speaking skills while being engaged and learning about a topic of her CHOICE! WIN WIN!

Remember, we are not preparing our children for the jobs of yesterday! We are preparing them for jobs that don't even exist. What we do know are some of the skills they will need. This generation will need to be independent problem solvers, critical thinkers, collaborators and morally and ethically productive citizens!

Thank you again for supporting our schools and joining in this educational journey!

Christi Thomas, Principal

School safety

Last week was school safety week at school. The students practiced our fire and lock down drills. Students did an excellent job of engaging in dialogue on how they can help keep themselves safe by not opening the door for strangers, looking both ways before boarding the bus, and sharing concerns they see during the day.

Today, the 3rd and 4th grade students received fire safety training by our Fishers Fire Department!
