Health Alert
Dear Parents:
If you haven't seen the coverage on the news, there is a condition affecting children called Acute Flaccid Myelitis or simply known as AFM. Although rare, it is a serious condition and we want you to be aware of symptoms. AFM can possibly be caused by a virus, environmental toxins or both but the polio or non polio enteroviruses as well as the west nile virus are believed to be a possible cause. Symptoms to look for if your child is a sudden onset of arm or leg weakness with a loss of muscle tone and reflexes. Others may experience a facial droop/weakness, difficulty moving the eyes, drooping eyelids, or difficulty with swallowing or slurred speech. As always, its a good idea to practice good hand washing and keeping your child home if they appear ill. If you're ever concerned with the way your child is acting, don't hesitate to call your physician so they can be evaluated.
Thank you,
Lisa Wilkerson and Leslie Kidd

Author Jacqueline James visits 5th grade classes
The 5th Grade students learned about people who helped to shape the Civil Rights Movement, these people were pivotal to the movement but there names remain in the backdrop to Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Author Jacqueline James visited Pine Street Friday, October 19, 2018 bringing the six books that each individually focused on a person that she had researched. Students shared what they knew about the civil rights movement and then were introduced to more parts as the author shared parts of these books providing what each person focused their efforts toward. One of the books focused on Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and his fight to desegregate schools and buses. The students were introduced to Ruby Shuttlesworth, the daughter of Reverend Shuttlesworth as she traveled from Atlanta with Ms. James. Having Ruby talk to the students provided a first hand experience about what was written in the book about her father. The students were able to talk with the author about putting factual evidence in stories they may write, though the story may be made up the author talked about how you can center the plot around things that actually took place.
September's ARTPRIZE FIELD TRIP
The 6th Grade Students have since written snapshot writings focusing on sensory details to help the readers of their writing visualize and feel what they were seeing and hearing as they visited the many art pieces walking the city of Grand Rapids.
