Counselor's Corner
Dear HPE families,
I hope that you were able to check out the latest Skylert from HSE schools focusing on the #wegotthis campaign. In surveys conducted by the district, HSE found that dealing with stress was one of the most common themes. Neuroscience tells us that stressed brains cannot learn or process information effectively. Learners perform their best work when they are calm and alert. In this video, you will learn more about how the brain functions and strategies for regulation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nop5DrO-klA&feature=youtu.be
At HPE, we have been focusing on mindfulness and other coping strategies to help our students when they are feeling stressed. Thank you for your continued support of our HPE students.
Sincerely,
Bethany Magill
HPE Counselor

BoxTops contest!
Please send in any clipped BoxTops for Education and label with your classroom teacher name. If you are using the new app and scanning your BoxTops, there is a new feature on the box top app. You can now enter a group name when scanning receipts to keep track of individual groups within HPE. Enter classroom teacher name, not child's, so scanned box tops can be tracked as well for the classroom contest. The class with the most clipped and scanned BoxTops will be awarded a pizza party in the spring! Runner up classes will receive extra recess!

Easy Ways to Help the PTO
Cut your Box Tops for Education and send them to school with your student at any time. Visit www.boxtops4education.com for a list of products.
If you shop on Amazon or at Kroger, check out these completely free and zero effort ways to raise money for the HPE PTO. The prices are the same, the service is the same, you shop the same way, but a portion of the purchase price will be donated to the PTO, that’s it!
On Amazon, just go to smile.amazon.com/ch/20-0114174 to link your account to the PTO and then check out using smile.amazon.com everytime--you cannot access this through an app so fill up your cart and then open a browser to check out or shop directly on smile.amazon.com.
For Kroger, login to your online account or create one using the Kroger Plus Card number you already have or get a new one. Then go to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and enroll in Community Rewards. Important information about AFTER SCHOOL EXPLORERS!
Registration for After School Explorers is Here!
What is After School Explorers? This amazing event allows the HPE kids to try their hand at and learn about a wide-ranging number of topics and activities. The event includes more than 10 classes held for an hour each day after school. Classes to choose will include jewelry making, animal ownership, running, and basketball to name just a few. Registration opened on Thursday! Class schedules were sent home last week BUT HAS BEEN UPDATED! See updated schedule attached to the Post. Below is important information:
ASE will be held this year from Tuesday, February 25 through Friday, February 28.
Registration for Classes: Thursday, Feb 6 9 pm through Monday, Feb 17 at 9 pm
Cost: Each class costs $5, you can pay by PayPal or check/cash – Monday is due Friday, Feb 22
Tips:
- We wipe the registrations each year so you need to re-add your child(ren) to the registration console with this year’s teacher(s)
- Your child can only attend one class per day. If you accidently register for more than one class per day, DO NOT PAY. Contact email below and we will work with you.
This event needs your support to be successful! We still need volunteers – to babysit instructors’ kids, to assist instructors in their classes, and to help set up the event each day. A signup has been set up for you to register as a volunteer: Https://signup.com/go/yhWWEET
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Kate Ziino at hpe.explorers@gmail.com.

Nurse Notes – Health Tips
Just a reminder of some important health tips in keeping your student’s happy and healthy
As we start to get into the colder months - a few health tips:
Water! Water! Water!!! Please encourage your child to drink water. Water helps rejuvenate and flush the body system, and with the dry air, it keeps the body hydrated decreasing nose bleeds.
Remind your child to take the time to Wash! Wash! Wash your hands!!! It truly helps stop germs from spreading. With cold and flu season starting already, please remind your child to cover their cough and sneeze and to wash their hands immediately after each cough/sneeze as well as after blowing their nose.
Recess: All students are expected to participate in recess each day. District Policy states that the students will go outside if the temperature is above 15 degrees with the wind chill factored in. Students not able to participate may bring a note from home or from their physician. School policy only allows a student to use a note from home for three days, after which the parent note must be replaced by a Doctors note. Parents need to communicate any recess excuse to the nurse and the teacher. PLEASE, dress your child appropriately with coats, hats and mittens. You can take layers off but you can't put them on if you don't have them!
Lice:
From time to time a case of head lice is reported to the school throughout the year. Should a case of head lice be brought to the school’s attention, the school nurse will maintain confidentiality of the student’s identity and assist the staff and parents with educational material. While the odds of your son or daughter developing a case of head lice are relatively small, the following includes useful information on head lice and the signs and symptoms.
Head Lice Information
- Head Lice are small parasitic insects that can be found on the heads of people.
- Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp.
- Head lice and head lice nits are found on the scalp, around and behind the ears and near
the neckline at the back of the head.
- Head lice cannot fly or jump; they can only crawl
- Head lice are spread by direct head‐to‐head contact
- Head lice are rarely spread by contact with clothing or personal items (such as combs,
brushes, hats or coats)
- Head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness
- Head lice are not known to spread disease.
Signs and symptoms of head lice infestation
- Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair
- Itching, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse
- Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark
- Sores on the head caused by scratching
If your child exhibits signs and symptoms of head lice infestation, you should examine your
child’s head (especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck) for crawling lice and nits. If
crawling lice and/or nits have been found, all household members should be examined for head
lice and/or nits every 3‐4 days. Persons with live (crawling) lice or nits within ¼ inch or less of
the scalp should be treated. We also encourage that you talk with your child’s physician for the best treatment plan.
For more information on head lice and treatment go to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) web site at http://www.cdc.gov
Report a Student Absence
If your child will be absent from school, please contact us at (317) 915-4210. You may call and leave a message on our attendance line anytime before 8:00 a.m. After 8:00 a.m., our office staff will be available to speak with you and document your child's absence. It is important to let us know your child will be absent or late arrival prior to 9:00 a.m.
If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (link below) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, please make sure you also contact the office by phone or email (apowell@hse.k12.in.us) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
