MESSAGE FROM MS. ESSEX
Dear Atkinson Families,
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to support our students yesterday, Friday the 19th, when our canceled GSA event was scheduled to take place.
And another THANK YOU to the parents who came out on Saturday morning to beautify the garden in front of the building. We couldn't do it without all of you.
It seems that summer has finally arrived! We are all happy to see the sun, but it brings up a couple of reminders. Please...
1. be sure your child is dressed for the weather.
2. send a water bottle to school with your student.
3. put sunscreen on your child before school. Teachers are not available to put sunscreen on any children.
In addition, we are noticing that many students have been unsupervised before and after school which has led to some injuries, disagreements, inappropriate school behavior, and harm to plants. While you are waiting for school to start or hanging out after school, it is imperative that you monitor your student at all times. The kindergarten teachers have put together an excellent letter for K families explaining some of the situations we need your help with. You can read that letter linked HERE.
If you have any questions about the expectations we have for students and families, please feel free to send me an email or give a call.
Thank you,
Beth Essex
Interim Principal
2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR
It's hard to believe this school year is ending soon! We are already in the process of planning for next year and it would be very helpful for us to know if your student(s) are NOT planning to return to Atkinson in the fall. If this is true for your family, please contact Katie in the office at kcarriker@pps.net. Thank you!!
23-24 SITE COUNCIL NOMINATIONS
Are you looking for a high impact / low time commitment way to help our school? Then consider joining the Site Council!
The school Site Council is "a group of elected people with the responsibility for developing, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the School Continuous Improvement Plan (SCIP)." Site Councils include the principal, as well as elected representatives from classroom teachers, parents, community members, and other school personnel. To learn more about Site Council, please see THIS PAGE for links to more information.
If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else for election, please complete THIS FORM. The nomination due date has been extended to May 29.
UPCOMING BOOK FAIR
Dear Parents and Families:
Get ready! This year's Book Fair is going to be epic! We've turned up the volume with more fun, more choices, and more excitement—so kids will arrive curious and leave bolder, prouder, and stronger than ever before. Here's what you need to know about our upcoming Fair:
- Every dollar you spend will benefit our school directly
- You can sign up for Book Fair eWallet—a convenient digital payment account, so your child can shop the Fair cash-free. Grandparents, friends, and others can contribute to the eWallet to help build your home library.
Save these dates and view our school’s Fair site:
- Fair Dates: Monday May 22-Friday May 26
- Book Fair Homepage: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/atkinsonelementaryschool13
We also need volunteers to help during the fair. If you are interested in helping, here is the link to sign up: https://forms.gle/8oppkPuY37iwqxp78.
We can’t wait to see your child at the Fair!

SUMMER DIGITAL ACCESS
Students will have access to most PPS Digital Toolkit applications during the summer. Students who enroll in summer school may notice changes in some applications once summer school begins. Most PPS Digital Toolkit applications will remain active throughout the summer. Applications may be temporarily unavailable at the beginning of August as PPS shifts to the 2023-2024 school year.
Please note that during the summer months, teachers are not active inside the digital tools and applications. Parents should be aware of what students are doing online. Parents may find the Securly application and digital and civic literacy resources helpful.
NEW FAMILY ADVISORY COUNCIL ON EDUCATION (FACE)
In the fall of 2023, PPS is launching a Family Advisory Council on Education (FACE). This new council is a great opportunity for family members, parents, and caregivers to participate in conversations about PPS' educational program. The Council is a space to provide input to proposed, new, and/or ongoing academic and instructional initiatives and engage in conversations with Chief Academic Officer Kimberlee Armstrong.
By June 16th, each PPS school has the opportunity to select one family member to represent their community. It is recommended that this person be selected from our School Site Council, but since we have not completed our Site Council elections, we have the option to choose a family member from the broader school community. Participation is a one year commitment and we will revisit composition and structure of the group each year. Please see this embedded Charter link for more information.
If you are interested in being considered as the Atkinson FACE representative, please contact Ms. Essex. Thank you!
FIELD DAY IS COMING!

This fun filled day requires help from volunteers to manage stations and help keep eyes on all of our students. If you would like to sign up to volunteer, you can do so on this sign up sheet.
