Staff Weekly Update

Week of February 11th, 2019

Big picture

Another reason to declare "I heart fonts" (pun intended) and why having so many font options are important!

Big picture
Just a little "heart humor" as we embark on Valentine's Day this week! If you can believe it, we are now in mid-February and after these fast five days, we will have a three-day weekend. It's always nice to have this light at the end of the tunnel!

Here's to a great week ahead and also looking forward to next Tuesday's Staff PD! I love our time together to learn, grow, and collaborate!

With much respect,

Connie

If you filled out a Val Pal form, the Valentine's Day fun starts this week! Have fun trying to guess which colleague is your Valentine's Day secret admirer!

SAVE THE DATE: SAT. MARCH 23rd, 2019!

This year, in lieu of our PTO Silent Auction, PTO would like to host a family event on Saturday, March 23rd from 3 pm to 7 pm. This event will be held at SGE with final locations soon TBD.

The committee came up with great ideas that will be inclusive of all families at SGE and also allow for PTO to fundraise for a Spring Enrichment Grant (just like our Fall Enrichment Grant, after Jog-A-Thon).

Some example activities during Spring Fling: Upaint Pottery, Dunk Tank, Pie Face, some free games, a concession stand and silent auction using a ticket process vs paper bidding. There may also be a Kiss the Pig/Goat contest leading up to this event!

FURTHER DETAILS WILL BE COMING SOON!

PTO's Canned Food Drive - New Collection Guidelines

Next week (2/11-2/15) is our PTO Canned Food Drive. Please help PTO by reminding parents of this event.

Also, when students bring in food, there are TWO NEW guidelines:

  1. PTO will NOT be keeping count of how much was brought in daily by each class. There will be no "contest" for next week.
  2. Instead of having students drop-off their food outside your room, please remind students to drop them off in the MAIN OFFICE. Staff will remind students as they enter through doors 1 and 10.

19-20 Supply Lists

Just to keep you all in the loop . . .

  • Jen Skura has provided us (Connie/Martha) with a copy of your K-4th grade supply lists
  • As we look at all five lists, should we notice any supply needs that are across the majority of your lists, we MAYBE requesting that this item/these items gets taken off and SGE will make a bulk purchase for our students.
  • Also, if applicable, we will also request that you adjust the verbiage on your lists. For example, “If your last name begins A-L – please bring tissue – If your last name begins with M-Z, please bring sanitizer, instead of using boys and girls.

We will update you on any changes we'd like your grade level to make on your supply lists by mid-February.

CONGRATULATIONS, 3RD GRADE SPECIALTY FAIR!

A round of applause to our 3rd-grade teachers and their students for their tremendous work in putting together another successful Specialty Fair! The students were so proud to show off all that they had learned about their specialty animal! The facts they shared were quite impressive!

Valentine's Day Party Details

Be sure to remind your parents to please purchase cards that DO NOT have candy attached to them. You're welcome to use this statement I've written below:

  • We look forward to celebrating Valentine's Day with our students at their classroom parties on Thursday, February 14th. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to emphasize the life skills of friendship and kindness with all of our students. As you are out shopping for Valentine cards to share with classmates, please select cards void of candy. Regretfully, we will be unable to pass out the candy. We have many students with food sensitivities and allergies and as always, our main goal is to keep everyone safe. If you elect to purchase cards that contain something extra attached to them, please ensure they are inedible. This could include pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. Thank you for ensuring that all students can have a safe and fun celebration.

Personal Business Leave Request - NEW GOOGLE FORM LINK!

  • Please click the NEW LINK HERE to access this form and then don't forget to SAVE this page under your "favorites."
  • Finally, as a friendly reminder of our ZCS Personal Business Leave + good information to know for our newest staff, I have copied/pasted the email about personal days sent by Becky Coffman on 5/8/16. This is per our CBA - Collective Bargaining Agreement
Section 9.03 Personal Business Leave
  • A. Amount – Each employee shall be entitled to be absent from work three (3) days each school year for the transaction of personal business or the conduct of personal or civic affairs. Such leaves may be used in whole or half day increments. Requests for personal business leave should be made 48 hours in advance in writing to the building principal. In cases of emergency or other similar unforeseen circumstance, requests may be made orally to both the substitute coordinator and the building principal.
  • B. Employees are discouraged from using personal business leave on staff development days or to extend a school vacation. If used on a staff development day then the employee remains totally responsible for securing the learning lost from their being absent during that activity.
  • C. Accumulation – If an employee does not use all of the personal business leave in a given school year, the remaining personal business leave shall be accumulated for use in later school year, except that no more than a total of two (2) days may be accumulated from earlier school years for use as personal business leave, so that the maximum total personal business leave available in any one school year is three (3) days earned during the school year and up to two (2) days accumulated from earlier school years or a total of five (5) days.
  • D. Conversion to Sick Leave – Any unused personal business leave not accumulated for use in later years as personal business leave shall be added to the employee’s accumulated sick leave.
