Report Card Reflections for next Quarter

As we are started into a next quarter, let's use this time to reflect on grade expectations. We spent several hours this morning reviewing report cards as there were several errors. Let's think about a few things:

1. When a student grade drops below ME or a C families can receive notification at any time. I have the ability to pay people for working with students and/or families outside of the instructional day until December. Feel free to use these funds if you need to do a conference or meeting with students and students and their families. Remember an interim can be sent at anytime during the semester.

2. Students can not receive below a ME or C without an interim.

3. All interims must be approved by Carmen. We are creating a standard interim form and a standard way to submit these-- information to come about this in upcoming newsletters.

4. Our Schoology gradebooks need to match the grades we are giving. We may need to discuss this as a team. If this is an issue, talk with Heather and/or Christine so we can spend some time during PL to discuss. Families should be able to see their children's grades at anytime.

5. We need at least one grade per week (9) for each subject area. Plan now how you will ensure that students have those number of grades.

Learning curve opportunity. Thank you in advance for your reflections and upcoming discussions about this.

Google Meet Updates

Google Meet - No Host Controls

From Eric Haines - Only the owner of the Meet (first one in) has the host controls. For nicknamed Meets, it does not matter who creates the link. It is the first one to click join that should have the host controls. If you are using an unnamed Meet (which should only be used with parents), then only the creator of the link has the host controls.

With that said, there have been similar reports of teachers not having the host controls even when they are the first in. This shouldn't happen, but Google has acknowledged that it is a bug that they are working on. If you have the blue shield in the bottom left, then you are the owner and have the host controls.

One other thing to try is resetting Chrome. Teachers that have experienced minor glitches in Google Meet have solved them by resetting Chrome. Here are the directions to do that:

Issues can often be resolved by resetting Chrome, as follows:

  • Click the 3 dots in the top-right corner of Chrome and select Settings

  • On the left side of the screen, click Advanced

  • In the menu that appears below Advanced, select Reset and clean up

  • In the middle of the screen, click Restore settings to their original defaults

  • Click Reset settings

You won't lose anything by doing this, so it’s safe to try when you have issues in Chrome, especially if the issues don’t appear in other browsers, or if the issues appear when using your Chrome account across multiple devices.

Please watch this video made by Tatiana about the new "raise hand" and "Google Backgrounds" feature that have been populating in Google Meet as well as how to change the order of student names to be alphabetized by last name!

Message from Michelle Carpenter

Please read below for a message from our Virtual Learning Mentor, Michelle Carpenter:

Hybrid Model--BOE Decision

Please review the FoF that was released last night following the BOE meeting. Please use this chart to indicate any questions that you have so that we can work to get answers if we do not yet have the information. HYBRID MODEL Q/A This document is also posted on our portal on the Distance Learning page at the very top.

Wednesday, November 11, 2020

During the Board of Education of Frederick County's public meeting this afternoon, the Board voted that FCPS will implement the hybrid learning model for students in grades prek-12 beginning on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

All teachers and instructional staff will report back to work in school buildings on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 to facilitate the transition to the hybrid model.

Effective January 1, 2021, employment will resume for FCPS staff who were subject to the fall Reduction in Force, with such staff reporting to work on Monday, January 4, 2021.

Decisions to modify implementation of the hybrid model or small group instruction will be determined by the Superintendent in collaboration with the Frederick County Health Department, based on a review of the metrics provided by the Maryland Department of Health.

Scheduling Appointments with Administration

Do you need to schedule an appointment with DeVeda or Carmen? When scheduling appointments with DeVeda, please email Missy and cc Hope. If scheduling an appointment with Carmen, please email Hope and cc Missy. We have aligned secretaries to each of us in this manner in an effort to streamline schedules. DeVeda--Missy and Carmen--Hope, however, as a team anyone is willing to assist. This is why we ask that you email the primary secretary and cc the second as indicated above so that, as a team, Missy and Hope can ensure questions are answered and your needs are being met.

Tentative Fun Run Schedule

On 12/2, we will hold our Fun Run! We have created a tentative schedule and have shared with our PTA that the run will occur during specials on this day. But wait...this is a WEDNESDAY and we don't usually have specials!!! This is correct! So, our schedule will shift a bit on this day.

Linked below is our schedule located on the portal. The last tab is called 12/2 Fun Run. You will note that the specials blocks have not changed, except for PreK, which we added so that all of our students have an opportunity to participate in this exciting event. You will also note some changes to the instructional day in an effort to maintain the integrity of our plans and continue to allow for 45 minutes of instruction for both math and reading as well as PATHS and our morning/afternoon meetings on this day. Please review and let Carmen know if you see any issues with the schedule, as indicated no later than 11/16 as we will be informing families soon thereafter.

SRES Schedule

Our coupon incentive basket is missing and we want to be able to provide these coupons to our families. It is typically housed in Lynne's office or the workroom. It is a small, plastic basket, which if memory serves, is tan. If you have seen this anywhere in the building or know where it may have landed, please contact Lynne! THANK YOU!

Special Education Data Requirement--Your Role

Our team is working diligently to catch up on evaluations that were delayed from last spring due to the pandemic in addition to evaluating students who are up for evaluation this year. Often, it is necessary for members of the evaluation team to reach out to other service providers to gain information about students. Please ensure that when this information is requested, you are responding in a timely manner, no more than 3 days from receipt of the request. Typically, these requests are quick but are legally part of the evaluation and IEP process. Additionally, evaluation processes occur on a compliance timeline, therefore, a timely response is required.

It is a requirement through IDEA that members of an IEP team provide data to be discussed to a family 5 days PRIOR to an IEP meeting. Team members will reach out to you and ask for data so that they can prepare a report to send home that remains in compliance with established timelines. It is required that this information be provided in a timely fashion. Any information not sent home to a family prior to a meeting cannot legally be discussed in an IEP meeting without the parents' permission.

Any questions should be posed to the team member requesting the data upon receipt of said request. Questions about the process or anything related to special education, can be sent to Carmen.

Conference Reporting--ACTION ITEM

Please complete the following form to indicate the number of conferences you held with families between our conference week in October through today for the purpose of parent/teacher conferences. This information is due no later than 4:00pm on Friday, 11/6/20.

Tatiana will be offering sessions on Monday, November 9th, to review Google Meet and Google Breakout Rooms and how to use them. This is an OPTIONAL session, and sessions will be recorded for future help.

Please note that most SEIAs do not have access to this feature. If you have tried to start a meet on your own and do not have the breakout room feature, you most likely are not on this list to have breakout rooms.

Virtual Hoppy Store

We are rolling out our Virtual Incentive Program for SRES effective November 12th! We are so excited to provide necessary reinforcement and acknowledgment that will help our students thrive in their learning environment. It is so important to recognize and provide specific feedback and reinforcement to our students on a daily basis. This is how they learn and grow! I know each of you are already doing this in your classrooms in some way or another and we want to be able to streamline that to meet the needs of all of our students. You will find all the necessary information below.
