Learning Updates for this Month
Kindergarten: It's incredible to think that we have already finished our entire first marking period of kindergarten! We've been learning so many things. Our phonics lessons continue to focus on orally blending sounds together to form words, rhyming and learning letter names and sounds. We have even added in reading words in print. In math we are still developing number sense by using math tools called five frames and ten frames. We are working on reading and writing numbers 0-10 along with counting to 20 forwards and backwards. In writing we are working on adding labels to our pictures so that our stories will eventually have more written words to go with our pictures. We are going to start off strong with this new marking period and continue to add on more learning!
First Grade: In reading, our first graders are working hard to use a lot of different strategies to figure out unknown words. In math, we are working on being able to add and subtract fluently using dots and other pictures to help us and are working on solving word/story problems. We are excited to begin our new marking period!
Second Grade: In reading, our second graders are learning all about trickster tales with our Bedtimes Tales reader. We are learning new sound patterns and strategies for figuring out new words as we read. Second graders are loving visiting the school library to check out books that are a good fit. In writing, we are writing personal narratives and doing daily journaling. In math, our unit is all about place value and measuring. We are also still continuing to learn to tell time.
EL: English Language (EL) students continue to receive support based on their language levels. Flocabulary, which is a computer based vocabulary program, continues to help support EL learning in the building. The second graders are beginning a new unit about food and how it grows. First graders are learning about animals and animal coverings. Kindergarten students are learning about colors, school tools, transportation, and family members.
Music: In music, the students are learning some special songs for the holidays. We will also be drawing pictures to show the story (or scene) of a song. They will bring their creations home to show you their work.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL): This week in Social Emotional Learning, students will be learning about impulse control. All students will learn about the effects of emotions and the importance of taking control of their actions. Practice these skills at home using the following resources: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade
