Spalding Spelling News

Spalding Spelling is no longer going to be part of special education core curriculum. Therefore it will be important for teachers to give placement tests for the Corrective Reading or Reading Mastery to see what teacher kits and student materials you will need for your students.

Corrective Reading comes in Decoding and Comprehension (grades 3 and up).

Reading Mastery comes in grades K, 1, 2 ( for grades 3 and below).

Additional information about these programs can be reviewed on the Core Curriculum document to assist you in making decisions. Also, you can ask your SDIF for help and/or bring students to the Core Curriculum Review Committee for suggestions.

We have heard that several teachers are loving and utilizing Reading A to Z, so we listened and we will be keeping that program as a supplemental program!

Please ask your SDIFs if you need any help!

Special Olympics Basketball News

It’s time to start preparing for Special Olympics Basketball! Basketball competition will be held Thursday, March 3, at Fieldhouse USA in Frisco.

We are very fortunate and excited to announce 2 new divisions to basketball competition. There is a ramp division that will allow more of our early skilled students the chance to compete and also an advanced division, which will challenge several of our competitive athletes.

Janice will start coming around this week to get your gyms ready for practice and make sure you all understand the rules and skills. She will be able to assist with practices at your campus until competition. In order to make this time efficient for close to 280 athletes, please send her times that your school gym is empty (elementary only).

For middle and high school, practices will be held during Partners PE classes. During the weeks of January 18-29, Trecia and Janice will be at your campuses getting all athletes scores for entries. We will send you a schedule in the next week when we will be at your campus.

During competition, each McKinney Maverick athlete will have a PAL from Boyd, McKinney North, or McKinney High assigned to them. If you have requests for a particular PAL to be with one of your athletes, please send those requests to Janice ASAP.

Medicals: Trecia has sent emails to all teachers with athletes needing a medical. If you have not received an email, your class is current.

Uniforms: If you are needing additional uniforms, size exchanges, etc., please let us know now. We have also received women’s shorts. If you want to exchange men’s sizes for your female athletes, please let us know.

We look forward to seeing you all over the next couple of weeks!
