Thank you to our PTA for hosting our Holiday Dinner and Movie Night. Families had an amazing time watching the movie and hanging out with friends. It was a fun night for all.

PTA News
A heartfelt thank you to all of our Jaguar families and friends for an amazing start to the school year. We have truly enjoyed getting to know you and your children at all of our PTA events these past few months. With your contributions, we ended up raising close to $18,000 for the school in our Opt-Out Fundraiser!
The support you have shown to the Bay Vista PTA is very much appreciated, and has allowed us to sponsor some pretty amazing experiences for our students, our families, and the school community: teacher luncheons, Fall Festival, Treat Trail, Movie Night, and many more to come in the second half of the school year.
As we look to 2022, we are excited about our upcoming activities like our rescheduled Grandparents Days, Be My Valentine Dance, Jaguar Jog, among others. Our success depends upon you and your families, and we look forward to our continued collaboration with you in 2022!

Art Updates from Mrs. Bowman
Kindergarten Happenings
In our Read Aloud stories, students are exposed to a variety of fictional and informational texts. The aim is to further support students in identifying parts of informational text, such as titles, headings, and illustrations/photographs. Students use those text features to predict and confirm the topic of texts. Students will begin to retell orally to enhance comprehension and encourages vocabulary development, student discourse, and active engagement. The text selection focuses on a message of trying something new. This will expand their perspective, build courage, and increase their confidence when they try something new.
In Reading Workshop, students continue to grow their reading muscles as they activate their Super Reading Powers, such as Pointer Power, Reread Power, and High-Frequency Word Power. Module E magnifies the Super Reading Power Sound Power as students are introduced to new decodable texts on a weekly basis.
In Writing Workshop, students are immersed in how-to writing. Students learn that how-to writing teaches the reader through clear, step-by-step directions. Students explore title pages, material pages, and sketches that teach. We continue to support the progression of convention development through lessons on capitalization, punctuation, spacing, and sound analysis.
In Math, we will continue measurement by comparing 2 objects with a measurable attribute in common to describe which has More of/less of as well as length and weight.
In Science we will continue to review scientific methods and recognize the 5 senses and related body parts.
1st Grade Frolics
When we return from the Holiday Break first grade will be focusing on the genre of literature known as literary text. In this genre students will be reading fiction stories that involve characters, settings, events and the plot of the story. The plot of the story will have a problem, important events and a resolution. Students will also dig deeper into the moral of the stories by inferring what the author wants the reader to learn. Students will be introduced to quotation marks in the text to understand which character is doing the talking inside the story. In Writing, the focus will be on opinion writing. They will share their opinion with or about a character that is in the text by writing friendly letters.
In Math, we will be adding and subtracting within 20. Students should be fluent using strategies such as counting on, making 10, decomposing numbers that lead to a ten and using relationships between addition and subtraction.
In Science, the next unit will be Pushes and Pulls. Students will demonstrate the way to change the motion of an object is by applying a push or a pull. They will learn that it takes energy to change the motion of objects.
Second Grade Happenings
Reading- Module E
In this module students will deepen their understanding of text features, author’s purpose, and author’s opinion as they move beyond the identification of each and analyze how each impacts the information and facts presented.
Writing
Students will continue to build on their work with expository writing as they are introduced to expository writing that answers a question. In this unit students will gather information from multiple sources to write a writing-to-answer text about a problem facing the environment.
Science
Students will be learning about measurement and volume, in this unit we will be measuring and comparing the volume of liquids using containers of various shapes and sizes.
Math
Students will be continuing to work with three digit numbers, comparing numbers and learning mental math strategies for addition and subtraction.
Third Grade Updates
Science – Third graders will be continuing their learning about Physical Science. We will be exploring friction in the Fighting Friction unit, magnetic force in Marvelous Magnets, and honing our investigation skill with Measure Up and Mass vs. Volume Lab.
Math – We are continuing our study of area of rectangular and non-rectangular shapes. Third graders will also be working on solving multi-step word problems using all four math operations, and solving math problems using picture and bar graphs.
ELA - Students will learn to read like historians as they first build background knowledge on the time period including the Underground Railroad and read about several abolitionists who fought to end slavery. They will then participate in a DBQ on Harriet Tubman. Students will study historical documents including text, photographs, and graphs/charts to determine the answer to the question, “What was Harriet Tubman’s Greatest Achievement?” The culminating activity for the DBQ is an opinion essay based on evidence they have gathered over the course of the unit.
4th Grade Facts
In January, 4th graders will be wrapping up Unit 3 in math, honing their multi-digit multiplication and division skills. They’ll also be exploring Area and Perimeter and how to convert measurements. Mid-month we will kick off our next unit and focus on Geometry. Students will be learning key vocabulary and how to classify shapes.
This month 4th grade scientists will continue working on our Physical Science units. We’ll explore speed, learning how it is calculated and the forces that affect it in addition to a unit on sound and how it is created from vibrations.
In ELA, 4th graders will be focusing on reading and annotating text sets that will be used in writing for opinion and informative/explanatory essays. Students will be practicing strategies that will help them to better understand the texts in reading. They will continue to integrate information from multiple sources in their essay writing.
