FOCUS ON READING

It's hard to believe that we are past the middle of September and have been in school over a month. What a great year we have had so far. Students are growing and learning so much.

Reading is a very important skill that students must master. Our district has a reading initiative called, "Read for a Better Life." We just kicked this off with a day full of reading. We encourage you to read to and with your child at home. It's important to remember that not just reading the words is important, but comprehension of the story is just as important as the ability to read. When you are listening to your child read, stop them periodically and ask them questions like:

*Who is the story about?

*What is the setting?

*What is the conflict in the story?

*What genre is this book?

*What would you "stop and jot" about this book?

STORYBOOK CHARACTER DAY/EARLY DISMISSAL

October 5 is our first early dismissal day of the year. School will be dismissed at 12:10 p.m. so we ask that parents plan ahead and make arrangements for your child that afternoon.

We will be doing celebrating Storybook Character Day on this same day. Students are invited to dress up as their favorite storybook character. Props and face covering are not allowed so please plan costume accordingly. We will have our Storybook Parade at 9:00 a.m. This is always a fun day for our students and we look forward to seeing which character they choose to be.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Please send your child to school in tennis shoes the days they go to p.e. Tennis shoes allow them to participate in the different physical activities with ease and protect their feet. Safety is a priority for all of our students and flip flops, sandals or heels do not provide the protection needed.

FREE/REDUCED LUNCHES

Please remember you must re-apply yearly to qualify for free/reduced lunches. This year, students whose families have not reapplied will roll off on September 26 and will have to pay full price for lunches starting on September 27. Applying via the online application processes quicker than a paper application. If you need to apply, please use the link below.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is very important for student learning. Our daily attendance goal is 98%. Currently, we are running, on average, about 96%. Please help us reach our goal by sending your child to school daily.

Official attendance time is 9:00 a.m. If your child arrives after 9, he/she will be counted absent for the day. Tardy time this school year is 8:01 a.m. If your child arrives after 8:01, the parent needs to walk the child into the front office and sign the child into school.

Thank you for help with these matters!
