Bernice Young Elementary Newsletter
Back to School Edition August 17, 2020
Principal Corner
We have outlined some important information about what school will look like in this week's newsletter. I know it is long but please read to the end. A popular student question is will we have specials? The good news is students will travel to ALL specials!
Thank you for getting your child ready for this school year. Any practice they can have wearing a face covering, opening their own lunch items, or washing their hands thoroughly will be appreciated.
Have a good last week of summer! We look forward to meeting you soon. Please reach out if you have additional questions.
Curriculum- Essential StandardsTeachers will focus on teaching essential standards this year. This is very important since summer was longer than usual. Essential standards are necessary for students to be successful at the next grade level. We assess for mastery of essential standards; we provide intervention for students that need it and an extension for those that are ready to move forward. Other standards will be taught but we are focusing our efforts to ensure students have mastered the essential standards. | The First Day of School The 1st day of school will look different this year. For safety reasons, we are limiting the number of extra people in our building. Parents will not be walking students to their classrooms. We will give each student in grades 2-5 a card to bring the first day of school so that we can help your child find their classroom. The card will have the child's name, teacher, and room number. Students in Kinder-1st grade will meet their teacher outside the first few days of school. They will practice walking in together. Kindergarten and 1st graders will receive a lanyard at the meet and greet. This lanyard will be worn to school and home but will be put away during the day. The purpose of the lanyard is to identify your child, their teacher, and how they get home from school each day. Please complete the blank section on the lanyard to identify how the child will get home. Use C for car, W for walk, B for bus (include bus number), or ASP for afterschool program. | Notes from Nurse Amy Nurse Amy is back at BYE! If you have medication, please drop it off at the school between 8:00-11:00 or 1:00-3:00. Plan to send multiple face coverings for your child each day. Sometimes they get wet or are dropped and they need to make a change during the day. Place them in a baggie in your child's backpack.
If your child has accidents, send an extra change of clothes. Our goal is to limit extra students in the nurse office due to possible Covid exposures. Please see the chart below from Nurse Amy. It is very important for your child to stay at home when they are sick. They can keep doing schoolwork through their Google Classroom or SeeSaw app. |

Registration Gateway---- Very Important
You should have received a letter in the mail asking you to update information on your student. It is very important you complete the update. This update includes any health concerns for our nurse, updated contact info, emergency contacts, and the technology acceptance use policy for your child. You must complete this before an ipad or chromebook can be issued to your child.
If you did not receive the letter please use this link (https://rgupdate.sdale.org/). Log into the returning student tab and NOT the new enrollment tab. You will be asked to verify your child's information. You will need their 9 digit student id for user name and their birthdate as the password (xx/xx/xxxx). This should be repeated for each one of your children that attends Springdale Public Schools.
If your student does not know his/her ID (student email addresses/lunch cards have their ID numbers) please call the office and we can help you.
Blended Learning Model
- Students will attend either M/W/F or T/TH.
- Students will be issued a device (ipad for K/1 and Chromebook for 2-5) so they can participate in their asynchronous learning on their remote learning days.
- Classroom teachers will ask families to join the Learning Management System (K-2 is SeeSaw and 3-5 is Google Classroom). Teachers will attach the weekly at-home learning to the management system. The remote learning will be self-guided.
- Students will need to complete the at-home learning on their remote learning days.
- Classroom teachers will be busy working with students that are participating in on-site learning. If your child has a question while working from home, please send an email to get help from a support staff member. The email address is young-remote@sdale.org. Classroom teachers will not be able to respond due to their on-site obligations.
- A staff member will return all emails within 2 hours.
Countactless Check-out- NEW We are limiting extra people in our building and we have added a new contactless check-out. We will have two parking spots for check-out. Use your camera on your phone to open the QR code and follow the checkout system. In the end, you will be directed to bring your ID to the door and pick up your child. *If you do not have a smart device, please ring the bell at the new front door and we will assist you.* | Drop-off/Pick-up Before and after school procedures will be similar to previous years. The doors will open at 7:25 and students will report straight to their classrooms or to eat breakfast. They will not wait in the hall. Bus riders will continue to enter through the back of the school. Car riders can be dropped off at either the front doors or the side doors of the school, no matter what grade the child is in. We would strongly encourage those that have students in Kindergarten and first grade to use the front doors. We ask that you pull ALL the way forward so more students can exit their cars at the same time. Those that are walking/riding bikes should enter through the front doors not arrive before 7:25.
| Lunch Students can purchase a tray or bring their lunch. We will have one choice in the cafeteria line this year. Kindergarten will be eating in the cafeteria each day. 1st-5th graders will alternate every other week eating in the cafeteria and the classroom. Trays will be delivered to the classroom on days that students eat in the room. Teachers will allow snacks to be eaten in class. They will give individual information regarding snacks. |

Drop-off/Pick-up
After school the bus riders will leave at 3:00. We will begin the car line at 3:00pm. All students will wait in their classroom until their car has arrived. Kindergarten and 1st grade (and siblings) will report to the front door. 2nd- 5th grade students will exit from the west side of the building out of the blue/green hallway. We are trying a new system. The car tags will have names and numbers. We will type in a number and it will display your child's name in their classroom and they will know to leave at that time. It is VERY Important you go to the correct location for pickup in the afternoon so your child reports to your car. Our goal is to use a number system app by the end of this year.
