Glacier Ridge Gazette
Principal’s Message
We don’t count at Glacier!
This time of year, people will often say to me in jest, “How many days left until school is out?!” I remember as a child counting the days, not because I didn’t like school, but because I liked summer better. It’s a time to enjoy life, slow down, and do the things that you can’t do with all the other responsibilities. Honestly, it’s very similar to being an educator.
May is absolutely the busiest time of the year. The analogy I use to describe May is that we have one foot in this year and one foot in next year. We are planning for two years at the same time. We are just finishing two months of testing (various grades at different times), going on field trips, planning end of year celebrations like the talent shows and 5th grade celebration, and dodgeball tournament. It seems that each day has something different or unique, which is fun, but exhausting. This is all while at the same time planning for next year - class lists, budget, school goals and initiatives, and new ideas. It is absolutely the busiest time of the year, but we love it.
I will often say that we love what we do at GRE, and I hope that shows in our output and the interactions we have with children. It is a hard job, but I believe that anything worth doing is likely to be hard. We are so fortunate to be able to have purpose built right into our jobs. We are lucky to be able to make a difference in the lives of others and get paid to do it. It brings us joy to collaborate with families to support students and see them grow into kind, empathetic, resilient, hard-working, lifelong learners that will soon make their own mark on the world.
Don’t get me wrong, I do look forward to summer, when my life slows down a little bit and I don’t always have to get up so early. I get to have a quiet office to think and plan for all the amazing things we get to do the next school year. I look forward to warm, sunny days and the joy of vacation with the family, and going for longer walks with my spouse. But I wouldn't want those things without the reward and purpose that my job gives me. For me, it is about balance. Having just the right amount of purpose and hard work, while at the same time taking time for my soul, my family and friends, hobbies, and rest.
So, when people ask if we are counting the days until school is out for the summer, the answer is “I don’t know.” However, I am looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to rejuvenating myself so I am happy, healthy, and excited to do it all over again and hopefully make a difference for others next year. Cheesy, I know - but true.
I hope you find your joy this summer.
Have a great weekend,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D

(DUBLIN, OH – May 1, 2023) — Glacier Ridge Elementary in Dublin, OH, has been named a national finalist in an elementary school creativity challenge organized by Jersey Mike’s Subs and the Harlem Globetrotters.
